These two hatched about 1.5 weeks ago. I know that’s a little early, but I found a “wing sexing” article. I’m not sure how true it is, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I’m pretty sure they’re both leghorn eggs fertilized by an americauna roo. What are your thoughts?
I’m nearing the end of my first hatch. I started with 23 eggs and am down to 5-6. I’ve had four hatch. One died a day later, and one just vanished yesterday, after about 4-5 days. From candling, it looks like the majority of the eggs should have hatched. But I keep going in to find eggs half...
This is my first hatch. This is my fourth chick to hatch. It’s been two days now so it’s pretty dry but it looks like this definitely not like my other three what is going on here
I’ve got two broodies and they both have a chick or two with some more eggs underneath. The hatched chicks are between 1-2 days old. Should I move them from under momma and out of the nest so they can find the crumble and water or is momma going to make sure they’re ok while she sits in the...
Ok so I’ve got 2 Broodies and they’ve been waiting patiently. I had 8 eggs on day 1 and didn’t realize I should close off my box until about 2 days later so we ended up with 23 eggs total. Apparently we had some “bad” eggs in there and mommas got rid of them. One in particular so I moved some of...
We’re on day 20 of our first hatch. I’m guessing by the lack of growth right here before hatch day, that this one died a few days ago. Any guess as to when? And would my hen have known that was the case? If so, how do they know?
I’ve heard of lockdown for incubator hatching, but does that still apply for natural hatching? I’ve got two and they normally take a 10-30 min stretch and eat in the evenings, but I’m not sure they did last night. (I had to step indoors so I couldn’t watch.) should I try to make them get up and...
So it’s our first hatch. It looks like we’ve gotten 21 out of 22 potential chicks to come. (Something ate one of them yesterday, so sad.) I have a very large box with two broody mommas in there. Pic attached. Is this enough room to keep all these chicks in, and should I even try to keep them...
I’ve got one Roo- Americauna. I’ve got 19 hens- leghorns, RIR, and Americauna. This is our first time hatching. I’ve got a RIR and an Americauna setting on 22 eggs. Has anyone had experience with different breeds taking longer to hatch than others?? Also, what’s the earliest you’ve ever seen a...
So I’ve got two hens sitting and should be hatching in the next 4-5 days. They are isolated from the others and they’ve had the same amount of eggs the whole time. Well today, just like every other day, we opened the box to let them out for their afternoon stretch and snack before they sit for...
I’ve got 19 hens about 1.5 yrs and 1 Roo. I’ve never let them hatch before because I’ve heard that letting one go broody for too long can get the others to do the same thing and quit laying. Well because we get a nest full everyday and it’s spring I guess that I’ve got two (EE/Americana and a...
So I’ve got a hen (19 actually) a little over a year old. They’ve all been laying great, 13-18 eggs per day roughly, average of 15. Three days ago she got a little broody and wanted to sit and had about 5-6 eggs under her. When I made her move (because I don’t want to hatch), the eggs were very...
So I’ve got 19pullets. 7 leghorns, 6 RIR and 6 EE. I know 12 of them are laying (it’s the most I’ve ever gotten in one day). All of the leghorns, 2 RIR and 3 EE. We feed them layers pellets. Is there anything we can do to encourage the others to lay or just have to wait it out? They’re 28 wks on...
So Two of my hens started squawking at each other in the nest box. 1 went away and the other about her business, whatever it was. I went in to check and as soon as she saw me, she started squawking again. I left, she came out of the box, perched up and squawked for a few minutes and is now...
So before I found this forum, I googled everything. And when it came to how long do eggs stay edible, I read that they are safe to eat for months afterwards. Can someone elaborate on this??
Do they REQUIRE refrigeration? I’ve read that they can be left at room temp for weeks and be fine.
I...
So this just happened.... all of our babies are the same age. We get the same size eggs everyday. We get 7-9 eggs per day, depending on who has cycled off. We didn’t collect yesterday. When we went to collect today, we either interrupted a lay, or one of them has started to lay on the clutch...
So I’ve heard people say wash and refrigerate and I’ve heard people say do not wash and leave on counter. I’m getting 9 eggs per day right now. I’ve given a couple doZen away. But what’s the best way to store them safely? I know washing them removes the bloom, but if they’re refrigerated are...
I’ve got 5-6 RIR and I can’t tell them pullet from cockerel. I managed to get these two pics for comparison. I think one is a cockerel and one a pullet. Am I right??
So I haven’t hatched or incubated anything yet. I’ve got 7 laying as of yesterday with 19 possible pullets total... 24 wks. I’ve got 6 white leghorns and an EE laying.
I am thinking about hatching but don’t even know the basics. Tried the “all you need to know” links, but looks like all the...
