So here's my crazy situation. My "established" flock is pretty established, but not that old. Had only one 3 yr old hen left, so introduced four 2 month old pullets that are now 4 months. Of course, old Alice is the queen. Am now adding a 1 yr old hen. Alice, the 3 yr old is not happy and...
I have one 3 year old EE hen remaining. She has been on layer pellets and free access to oyster shell. I now have 5 pullets, ranging from 11 to 14 weeks. I have them separated by wire for now and they are on chick starter. I know they need the starter/grower until they're about 6 months...
I purchased three 12 week old pullets from a feed store where they were raised from 1 day olds. Presumably they were inoculated with whatever they give chicks before shipping. I want to add 2 more 9 week old pullets from someone who hatched and raised his own. Should I worry about mixing...
My Rhode Island Red has been laying very thin shelled eggs for some time now. They have free access to calcium. She eats well and otherwise seems healthy. Any suggestions? My other two chickens lay perfectly normal shelled eggs.
It is certainly not cold yet, and seldom gets really cold in LA, but it is getting cooler. The windows to the coop have been wide open all summer. Am wondering how "cool" does it need to get for me to start closing the windows at night?
Since it has gotten warmer here, in the 80's well into the evening, my 5 week olds don't want to stay in their coop. They were going in and getting on their baby roost every night like good girls. Now they hang out and roost on the "porch" of their coop or even on top of the coop hatch door...
My 4 week old RIR is still feathering out while the sister is much further along in development. The position of the tail feathers is different from the rest also. Is Reba going to be Robert?

I've been looking and reading up on EE chicks and chickens. Haven't seen any pics very similar to General Westmoreland. He's our wild, free ranging city neighborhood rooster.
We've had a stray rooster in our midcity neighborhood since last October. I'm sure a backyarder let him loose since we can't have roosters in the city of Baton Rouge. He's a fine looking Easter Egger and he roosts in a tree down the street every night. He's survived several episodes of days...
After reading these threads, I decided to actually read the bag of food given to us from the store where we got our chicks to see if it had antibiotic in it. And it's chick GROWER! My babies are only 3 weeks old! They are doing fine, but should I run out tomorrow and get STARTER?
Hello everyone. I'm a first timer, although grew up with LOTS of chickens in my backyard. I've got 6 new biddies that I'm already in love with. Did some research before starting and decided on RIR and Barred Rocks. Dealer talked me into "Araucanas" which from research, I realize are probably...
