Are there any traits that Silkies are prone to. I was told by someone that because of their skull size/shape they can have some issues with balance and dizziness. I have a bird that is doing this weird head-jerking twitch and was told not to worry about it and it was caused by the skull? True...
Otherwise acting normal. Just got this bird last night from the same breeder I bought the rest of my chickens from as day olds. I immediately noticed her doing this head jerking motion - very weird. Any idea what it could be?
Just picked up a new young Silkie hen to ad to my flock. When I let her out of the crate she started to shake her head a bit then started having a twitch - jerking motion to the side. She was doing it again this morning but seems fine otherwise. Any ideas?
Really nice birds bought from a local breeder "Performance Poultry". Show quality birds but I ended up with too many roosters. Will consider trades. I will post pics later this weekend.
My chicks are 4 weeks old tomorrow. When do you think I should be able to sex them?
Thanks everyone!! I will try and take some pics but if anyone has any tried and true "the feathers are like this on a pullet and like this on a roo" or anything to do with the combs I would really appreciate it...
I have 7 Silkies and 11 Brahmas - all 2 1/2 weeks old. I would love to get them into the coop with one or possibly two heat lamps so they have lots of room. I was wondering if anyone else has moved them out yet. This week the outside daytime temps will be in the upper 60F low 70F (low 20ishC)...
My chicks are now 2 weeks old so I thought I'd start using shavings instead of paper towel. They poop so much and I work all day so I can't be there to keep laying new toweling. I found with the Silkies especially, they were getting poop balls on their feet. I had to wash them in the bathroom...
OK, I finally have some pics to post that I took this morning. I have 11 Buff Brahma (standard) and 7 White Silkies. They are the sweetest things I was worried that the Brahmas might bully the Silkies, but one little Silkie let a Brahma have it this morning....chased him across the brooder...
Twelve hours ago he was standing by himself with his eyes closed. He had a full crop but he started to pass clear liquid/jelly stuff and then this morning died. Is this a fluke or should I be concerned about the rest of the chicks? Everyone else seems fine. Any idea what happened?
I am planning on building a run with 1" chicken wire and running electric fence around the top and bottom. I could run as much electric fence around it as I want and make it like Fort Knox! Our coop is placed in our half acre side yard that is fenced on two sides with 5.5' foot chain link...
I got up three times in the night to check my new chicks and all is well!!! I am so relieved. I was a bit concerned for a few of the Silkies but everyone is fine! I, on the other hand, feel like I haven't slept at all. Today is a PA day for my daughter so she can keep an eye on things or I might...
Just picked up my new chicks and got them settled in their brooder. Most of them are right into the food and water but I have a few Silkies and one Brahma that seem to be napping. It strikes me as odd because everyone else is moving around. I am going to keep an eye on them, but if they don't...
I stopped at TSC to pick up a feeder and waterer for my chicks that are due to come this weekend. They gave me a bag of Rolling Acres Layer Krum and when I asked about chick starter they said it was the same thing. I took it knowing I was going to need it eventually....but will it be OK for the...
Hi everyone. I am new to chickens and expecting my chicks in one week. I am getting 12 Buff Brahma (standard) and 6 Silkies and I can't wait! So far this forum has been a great source of information on everything chicken. I posted a few pictures of our new coop my hubby built in the forum and...
8 days until our first ever day old chicks arrive! 12 Standard Buff Brahma and 6 White Silkies!
This is the coop my DH made for me. We saw one just like this but smaller on a website and I loved it.....he bought the materials and away we went! Not bad for a Professor of Auto Mechanics...
I am eagerly awaiting my first ever batch of chicks!! I ordered day-olds from a very reputable breeder in our area - 12 Buff Brahma (standard) and 6 White Silkies. I have always wanted chickens and have dragged my hubby into more poultry barns at fairs than he cared to see! Last year I decided...
