Hi everyone,
We have a flock of 6 chickens. All hens and about 2 years old. They have an elevated coop and an enclosed run.
I'm building a new run and also thinking about getting a few female muscovys.
My coop is fairly small, only about 24 square feet.
If I built the muscovys...
I had another sour crop hen I've been dealing with. She's been in a dog crate in the garage with garlic water and coconut oil for 5 days now. The liquids in her crop finally drained and she started pooping. Crop is much smaller and inflammation is gone.
I can still feel a small amount of grit...
Hi all,
I have a 1 year old Golden Comet hen.
A few days ago, I noticed that she's been isolating herself from the flock when in the run, just digging holes. She also didn't come running when I gave them scratch grains. When let out in the yard, she scratched around with the others perfectly...
We have a ten month old hen who I found standing still in the run with her eyes closed.
Took her out and her crop is very full and squishy.
I massaged her crop and she threw up some brown liquid.
I have her isolated in the bed of my truck and she's standing still with her eyes closed...
Hi,
I'm on one acre in a typical subdivision and I'm wondering what type of ducks would be good for us.
They'd be living along with seven chickens in a shared run with separate coop.
We let the chickens out for a handful of hours a day and they really don't go more than 100' from the coop...
Hi,
We're currently using a fully enclosed hardware cloth run I built. We're looking however to replace it with something larger.
I can get one of those huge prefab runs which is a dog run with chicken wire.
I know chicken wire isn't ideal, but I'm interested in it for the simplicity...
Hi again,
We have seven chickens and I was planning on building a large shared coop, a large run and adding ducks.
I was then wondering if I could just build the large run, stick my existing chicken coop in it and build another coop for the ducks in the same run?
Essentially, my existing...
Hi all,
We currently have 7 golden comet hens (9 months old) and are thinking about getting some ducks.
This spring, I'm converting a shed to a new coop and buying a dog kennel for a run. The run will be bottom wrapped in hardware cloth and an electric fence surrounding it. I'm also pouring a...
Hi all,
We have seven Golden Comet hens in NH.
They're all 9 months old and one started losing feathers on her back last week and now all of them are.
I noticed that they're picking at thier own feathers a bit too now.
Could this be a group mass molt? Or should I be concerned about...
Hi all,
Had a fox try to get in. I ended up getting two shots off before it could get through the hardware cloth, but I shot the ground due to my chickens getting in the way.
I went out and bought an electric fence. I'm just running a single line, looped, so its now a double row.
Problem is...
Hi all, just had a fox try to get my 6, seven week old chickens. Hardware cloth kept it out and I fired a couple shots and scared it off. Couldn't get a shot on it without hitting my birds, so I shot into the ground.
Looking at electric fences now. The Patriot PE2 is only 0.1 joule and im only...
Hi all, here are my 4.5 week old golden comets. They all look like pullets? They've all started to darken up now that their feathers are coming in.
Are they ready to go outside permanently yet?
I have thier brooder dow to 73. I'm in New Hampshire, so we're looking at days in the 80s and our...
Hi everyone.
I made my coop pretty short. I'm putting the roost beams in and I'm wondering about poop boards.
Due to the height restriction, I'm only able to really get the roosts a foot off the ground. Is this okay? I'm not sure how much headroom the birds need. They're golden comets, so a...
Hi all, got a one week old chick who somehow got poop stuck to her neck. Its really on there. Should I try to yank it off?
Not sure if it'll work its way off on its own. I tried pulling it off and she really hated it.
Hi all,
I posted yesterday regarding my coop turning out smaller than I had planned.
I managed to double the size now and I have a couple of questions for finishing up.
Do I need to insulate the walls and roof? I live in southern New Hampshire. Winters are about 6-7 months of snow...
Hi all, I started building my coop and it ended up framing in smaller than I expected.
We have 7 golden comet chicks, should end up with all hens.
The coop ended up coming in at 14 square feet and is built in a way which I can't find a way to extend the area. The run is quite large and...
Hi all, I'm currently building my coop for our 7 golden comets who are four days old right now.
I see that chicken wire isn't good and animals will rip through it.
I'm planning on building a run which is 5' tall. Could I use hardware cloth on the bottom few feet and chicken wire on the top...
Hi all, i just picked up 7 golden comets. Am I correct in thinking that they are able to be fairly accurately sexed as hatchling because they're sex linked chicks?
I bought them as 90% female. There is one which looks pretty light colored (top left in photo). Any GC experts who can take a look...
Hi all,
I'm currently furloughed as a state government employee and am already bored.
Decided to use whatever scrap wood I had laying around to start a quail hutch. We're thinking six hens solely for eggs.
I framed this hutch together quickly today and realized that the front will be about...
Hi all, we're considering some coturnix quail for our backyard. We are only looking for a few eggs and the birds would essentially be pets.
We were thinking 6 females only. Unfortunately, I can't find any for sale here in New Hampshire, so I'd probably have to buy sexed birds online. Anyone...
