    New email problem

For the last week or so, when I get an eMail notification for a thread I am watching, when I click the See This Post button, it no longer takes me directly to that post. Instead, it puts me at the top of that page. Here is the most recent link I received as an example...

    Processing Day

Processed my first Cornish X today - seven out of the 14 that have survived. I started with 30, one died while still in the brooder, then I lost 14 at once after I had moved them outside and a cold front blew through Memorial Day weekend. Another one, who I was calling Game because she was so...

    First try at meaties!

Well I've been lurking in this forum forever and kept planning to get meaties "someday". Anyway, a new Ranch Supply store opened in town this weekend. Naturally I had to go look at the chickens and, lo and behold, they had Cornish Rock straight run! $1.29/ea., which seemed like a decent price...

    Second shell?

Occasionally I'll find an egg that looks cracked, and I'm thinking it's a loss. But on closer inspection there is another shell over the egg that is cracked, usually only partially there (not completely covering). Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what is happening?

    Delaware or ?

A friend has a rooster I'm interested in. I thought this was a Delaware roo the first time I saw a pic of him. But the friend just sent me another pic of him and now I'm not so sure. Admiitedly, it's not a very good quality pic. Any ideas?

    Christmas is in the cooler!

Christmas, my BBB hen, is now resting comfortably in the cooler! She dressed out at 22 lbs. This is my second go at a home raised turkey. Her "brother", Thanksgiving, weighed in at just over 36 lbs. This girl should be easier to handle - we had to cut him in half and cook each half separately!

    Pale eggs?

My birds have suddenly (last few days) started laying very pale, almost white eggs. They also seem to be smaller than they were before. The breeds are Red sex link, Black sex link, and Rhode Island Red. They have free access to oyster shell. The last two bags of feed have been Purina Layena...

    The Big Day

Well, today was the big day! I finished the ramp to the new coop (dubbed The Poultry Palace) and had left the run and gone over to the people door. I was spreading straw around in it and the girls started coming up the ramp one by one to check it out. It was great - they were so excited! They...

    Deformed beak?

I have a batch of chicks I got early in Feb. I noticed today that one of the Ameraucana's lower beak doesn't line up with the upper one. It's off by more than just a little bit. I've got 21 chicks in the brooder (10 for a friend, 11 for myself) so I don't know if it was always this way or not...

    Solar light and water heating?

I'd like to have a light in my coop and will also need to keep my water from freezing this winter. The coop is far enough away from my house that I'd like to use solar power. Found this on Amazon - is it a good start? Sunforce 50044 60-Watt Solar Charging Kit Obviously I'll need a battery or...

    Feed consumption

I have 10 chickens - 4 RIRs, 4 Red Sex Links, and 2 Black Sex Links. They were hatched May 1st and about half or so have started laying. I'm feeding them Layens pellets. What kind of feed consumption should I expect? I bought a 50 lb. bag last Wed. and they've already consumed half of it. Is...

    Egg shells?

My birds just started laying. I've heard people talk about feeding them egg shells. Do you need to grind them? Do they need to be washed first?

When do they stop laying "pullet" eggs?

My chickens just started laying about 3 days ago! So far, all but one of the eggs have been small "pullet" eggs. What I'm wondering is - how long before they start laying regular sized eggs?

    Red Sex Links?

The feed store clerk where I got these told me they were BOs. They had a nice yellow color as babies, though with some white. At two weeks, though, they are starting to look different (the one's with white in them). About 12 weeks. The one's in question are the one's with the dirty white...

    Chick Mahal

My coop and run are complete! I got the basic design from the Purina website, but I enlarged it for my flock - 4 RIRs, 4 BOs and 2 Black Sex-Links. The first one is the run and coop. The coop is 4x8 and has a skylight in it. The run is 8x16 and has wire all the way around, even over the top...

    Food and water in coop?

My "flock" of ~6 week old's are spending their first night out. I have food and water in the run, but not in the coop. Are they going to be alright overnight without their food and water?

    First night out

It's my girls first night out. They are ~6 weeks old. I just went out to check on them (9:30 PM) and they are all huddled together in their run. I put a light in their coop hoping that when it got dark they would head inside. While it was still light out, Twiggy (the smallest, a BO) went up the...

    Pecking issue

I have 10 pullets, about 4 weeks old. 4 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Buff Orpingtons, and 2 Black Sex Links. One of the Rhode Islands has started chasing the others around and pecking at them. I have them in a 100 gallon galvanized water tank - it's 4 feet long by 2 feet wide by 2 feet high. According...
