Hello BYC!
I didn't have my phone when I went in and found the parasites. It was a perfect Kodak moment, but by the time I returned, the girls had walked all over the wormy poo.
What kind of worms are these, and what is my best course of action?
They look like tape worm segments to me...
I was once looking around a creekbed with my mom, and I came across a sharp piece of worked stone. I brought it to Mom, and said "I think I found an arrowhead!"
She gave me a big smile and said "When people don't find an arrowhead, they ask if it's an arrowhead. When you find one, you know it."...
I just finished up an addition to my run today
A big part of why I built the addition was because some of the hens have become pretty aggressive. I'm assuming it's due to the broody hatching some new chicks, and they lost space to a defensive mama hen.
A Buff Orpington and a Sapphire Gem are...
My hens seem to be getting pretty fed up with the new mama hen and her chicks taking up half of the coop. Time for an extension!
A Hoop Coop with cattle panels seems to be quick and easy, compared to the overbuilt run I have now.
There's a big propane tank in my way, so I only have about 9'x6'...
Hello BYC!
I have acquired six new baby chicks as of 5/1/2022. This was my first time letting a broody hen hatch eggs. I have no rooster, but I found a local that sells fertilized eggs cheap enough that it was worth a try.
6 of 7 hatched. 4 Dominiques, 1 EE, 1 OE. I'm a little concerned three...
I have two olive eggers that were hatched January 20th (26 weeks old if my math is right). I've had suspicions for awhile. Behaviors after pics.
Suspect roo is on the left. Hen on the right.
Better shot of tails. Suspect roo on left, hen on right:
Another side shot. Roo left, hen right...
One of my RIR hens has an impacted crop. It gets super fat, like a baseball.
We've been massaging it several times a day for a few days. Today is day 3. On day 1, we injected olive oil into her mouth and onto her feathers (whoops!)
She's isolated in a dog crate in the run, with her own water...
Hello again, oh fountain of chicken knowledge!
We're looking to build a day use chicken tractor for eight birds. I am not comfortable with leaving them out free ranging, due to brave hawks and coyotes. We're looking to make a cage-range run.
Are the space requirements the same for a regular...
My run has a thin layer of sand between the dirt and the shavings and straw. 2" at the deepest probably, but most spots it's under 1". It's a covered run, designed to be like an open coop.
When I put it together, I felt I was being clever and that it would help with rain drainage. We've gone...
I see a bunch of threads about NOT using eucalyptus shavings, but I can't find any on using the branches as a perch. They may be here, but so buried by shavings threads that I can't find them!
Are the branches okay for perches? Do I need to treat them with something first?
I used to have a...
My girlfriend and I have been working on this since November 2020. Off and on, so it took awhile, but we weren't ready for chicks anyway.
We built around an existing frame of a structure. It used to be a housing for some blueberry plants in a few raised beds, but it didn't work out. There was a...
Hello!
I live in Southern California. The owner of the property is really into native landscaping, but I'm having trouble finding information on a few of the plants. Google just wants to sell me stuff and leave out portions of my searches, and it's super annoying.
I've looked at a couple of...
