Sometimes my chicken eggs have spots - grayish, almost looks like mildew - on the inside of the eggshell. Obviously, I don't notice this until the egg is cracked into my frying pan.
Anybody know what causes this? Are the eggs safe to eat?
Last night I finally got sick of moving my 9 week old pullets in and out of the house every morning and night. They were crowding by the back door when I went out to close my 2yo BO's in, so I just took the pullets and set them on roosts in the coop and shut them in.
I know it takes them a...
One of my big BO hens somehow broke a toe last summer. It healed, but now it's all crooked, and that toe doesn't get used when she's scratching around the yard. So now that one claw is getting ridiculously long.
I don't think it's bothering her... can I cut it? Should I cut it?
Two days ago after letting my 2 year old hens out of their coop, I heard crowing coming from my yard. I have no roosters, and this has never happened before that I know of, so it took a few times hearing it before I was sure that it was in fact coming from my hens. I went outside to see what...
I'm looking to move my 6 wyandotte chicks (7 weeks old) into the big coop with my 4 BO's. They've been hanging out in a side-by-side run for a couple of weeks - still sleeping in my house, and what a pain to move them in and out every day! While they have a run, my hens free-range the yard...
I have 5 buff orpingtons, getting about 3 eggs a day right now. More than half of my eggs have blood or meat spots, so that I have taken to cracking them in a separate bowl while cooking. Personally, I don't care - I scoop out any spots and get on with my cooking. But I donate extra eggs to...
Couldn't quite figure out how to phrase this question so it made sense. At this point, it's just hypothetical curiosity, but still I wonder...
Chicken eggs take 3 weeks to hatch, correct? What if I have a hen that goes broody a week before I put fertile eggs in the nest for her to hatch...
My BO started molting about two months ago, and went broody about 2 weeks ago. Every morning when I let the hens out, I toss Ms. Broody out into the yard to eat something for-crying-out-loud. We're waiting out the broodiness, but I've tossed her out of the nest box a couple times a day since...
We have several opossums that hang around our yard at night (in a sort-of town). They're mostly scrounging my compost pile, along with a few raccoons here and there.
My chickens go in promptly at dusk, and I watch for the last one to go in so I can close them up right away. The coop is...
I just want to preface this with the confession that I got chickens for eggs, the end. We had a "house chicken" and enjoyed her, but I never considered them particularly affectionate. Mostly I just think of them as dumb birds that lay eggs that I eat.
Then today as I was bringing water to the...
One of my buff orp hens has been laying for about 3 weeks. The last several days, she's been hanging out in the coop taking forever to lay an egg, and then sitting around on it for a long time after. She's probably in there for 2 or 3 hours every day. If I open the door to check on her, she...
We have a golf ball in each of our laying boxes. Two of our five 5-month old hens are laying, and both of them went right in the box to lay their eggs. Can I take the golf balls out, now that I already have two ladies using the nest boxes, or should I leave them until all 5 are laying...
I am currently keeping 5 buff orpington hens that are 5 months old. I have two that have started laying in the last couple of weeks but the others haven't yet followed suit. I jumped into chickens with both feet (a frequent affliction, I'm afraid), but have very much enjoyed having them!
We...
