I have 3 almost 2 month old chicks I’m keeping separate from my larger flock til they are larger. I’ve been putting them outside in a small coop I bought on Amazon during the day, and bringing them inside our garage at night. My husband is ready for them to go outside at night now. I’m trying to...
I have 3 four week old chicks that I am about to transfer to a tent in garage from their small brooder. At night I plan to put heat lamp on, but do they need it if the outside temp is above 80 degrees? And probably warmer in garage. Thank you for any info.
A neighbors dog came in and attacked my flock this morning. She carried off a hen, which i got back. But my roo is gone, his frsthers scattered around my yard. He might be hiding, but i have looked everywhere. Any advice on how to look for him? He is very devoted to his flock, and i am very fond...
My hen seems to be getting better, is eating, drinking, and walking a bit. She wants to be with her flock and sleep with them. Her wounds seem to be healing slowly.. should there be more improvement by this time? I'm going to attach a picture.
My hen was attacked by a large neighborhood dog on Saturday. She is still alive and able to walk around. I bathed her wounds with hydrogen peroxide spray, then applied chlorohexidine, then iodine. I have her in our garage, and she is eating and drinking water (just her favorite treats, scrambled...
My bantam roo (@4 yo), alternates between attacks and then seemingly friendly behavior. He flies up on my arm when i stretch it out, but also sometimes jumps on my back and tries to peck the back of my neck. For the most part he tolerates my presence around the hens. Sometimes he just hops on...
Thanks in advance for any insight or possible explanations. I just want to know if I need to change how I am taking care of my flock. She seemed fine day before yesterday, and possibly even yesterday as well, according to my daughter. It is unusually humid and hot this morning and last summer...
Was checking on my flock who had just gone in to roost, and saw blood on board. My hen, Fiona, has some type of injury to her back claw. I washed it with chlorohexidene and she is inside with me now. It is still bleeding and its been an hour at least. So we are thinking we should wrap it. Does...
I have a couple of d'uccles (mille fleur and porcelain). In the past, they snuggled up to our bigger hens for warmth during the winter. But lately they have moved down in the pecking order. The porcelain d'uccle is near the bottom, and she has been sleeping alone in an upper corner of the coop...
I have been finding what looks like explosions of feathers in the coop in the morning. Some hens have lost some but not bald. But a couple of my hens have lost a bunch of feathers. The first one seems to be growing them back. The latest hen looks like she lost a bunch literally overnight. Is...
My bantam rooster, who is fiesty but my favorite, came at my husband, who then swung at him with a broom, and apparently hit him in the head. My roos eye is swollen shut, he is lethargic, not eating or drinking. This happened around an hour ago. Is there anything I can do to help him survive? He...
My husband wants me to rehome both some hens as well as the roos. I found a home for a couple of roos and they want some hens. I am keeping my original roo as he is aggressive so i dont want to pass him to someone else. The other roos have completely different temperaments from him... all...
I noticed my cochin on the ground panting at dusk. Normally, even though large and heavy, she makes her way to the top roost. She tried but was unable to climb the stairs. I put her on the bottom roost, and she kind of sprawled out and stayed there, panting. So i picked her up to bring her...
How does one find chicks that ran off? My husband didnt put them in coop last night and they were all huddled outside. One was killed. I briefly saw the other 3 when i got back in town this morning. I didnt know what happened yet and had to go to an appt. Got back and now all are gone. Im...
Is it ok to leave an overhead fan running at night in the coop? It was around 94 degrees today, but cooler at dusk. However, when the flock went to roost, several had wings spread out and panting. I didnt think it was that hot, but decided to leave the fan on. There is a lot of pecking and...
We took piping eggs away from a new mother hen that we suspect was killing newly hatched chicks. This one just hatched in my daughters hand. We have her under a heat lamp and the thermometer says 101. She is still shivering a bit. I am wondering how warm to keep her. Thank you for any tips on...
I have a lone chick that hatched from a damaged shell about a week ago. I'm trying to sneak her under a broody hen but the broody hen is barely tolerating her (yellow chick in pic). A different hen has a chick of roughly same age but she is having difficulty protecting it from a larger broody...
I posted yesterday about a damaged egg. We put it under a heat lamp and it is hatching now. I dont know what to do to further support it. Could someone give me advice? I figure most important thing is to keep her warm. Should i go ahead and touch something damp to its beak to help hydrate it?
Im not sure exactly how old the chick is. The egg was damaged hours ago after a hen left it on ground. I think it is injured as i see some blood. It is peeping loudly and moving around, and breathing fast.. Im holding it to keep it warm. Have no idea what to do. I thought about helping it hatch...
I currently have 5 broody hens in our coop that are each sitting on multiple eggs (long story) . They are in elevated nesting boxes. Today i heard peeping and found a baby chick on the floor beneath the hens. I picked it up and presented it to the mother hen. She pecked at it pretty hard, twice...
