Hi all. I need some help with lice treatment. I was able to pick up some Boss Pour-on (5% Permethrin) to treat my flock after discovering wing lice. I've been reading posts here about diluting and spraying but I am not sure about the dilution ratio. Also I have 2 chicks that are 8 days old...
Are there any Canadians who have found a product/ source for treating feather lice in chickens that is readily available? It is unfortunate that we have such difficulty getting some of the products that are readily available elsewhere to treat simple chicken problems. I have heard that there...
Linus and his sisters Victoria and Beatrice. There is also Leo, who is quite aggressive, so heis isolated and will be culled today. This morning I stood in surprise as I watched Victoria (Vicky) start crowing. Does anybody have experience with how these pullets turn out? I have a 10 month old...
Last fall I inherited a mama hen with her 3 chicks. They are now laying. Immediately after she separated from them she was brooding again and hatched 4 new chicks end of December. She started separating from them last week, and laid her first egg yesterday. Tonight she's back in the nest box...
Hi all, hoping someone knows what this is. Winnie is about 5 weeks old, and has this curved upper beak. I noticed when I went to trim it this bulge under the beak. Does anyone with experience know if this is an injury from the beak itself, or a birth defect or a tumor or something? I gave her...
Hi all!
I inhereted these 4 in the fall. I was wondering if anybody had any idea what mixes the cockerel might be, and if he may possibly have a blue egg gene or not.
The 3 chicks below I believe may be all pullets, they came from the same hatch. 1 of the blacks is bigger than the other two...
Isabel, a serial brooding Blue Copper Marans went broody a few days ago. She means business. Now today, I find Annie, my Buff Orpington has now decided to sit as well. Cool, but she hasn't been laying since she went into molt in October. She's been a successful Broody in the past, but always...
I apparently have a serial broody. Last brood of chicks hatched end of August, and now Isabel the Blue Copper Maran is sitting on eggs again.
I'm in PNW where it is cool/cold & damp for the next 3-4 months. I have never had a winter hatch.
We'll see how Miss Isabel makes out.
I inherited these, and trying to figure out what they might be and what their colour egg genes they might have.
The bigger boy seems to me to me an Easter egger. White Ameraucana cross. Any thoughts? What would his colouring be?
And the little one woth the black splotches?
I'm processing an 8 month old cockerel, and he has a bright green spot on his leg. I've processed a dozen or so before and never saw this. Is it simply a bruise?
What age do Marans Roosters get their copper coloring? This is Sammy, he's just about 20 weeks old. I bought him as a day-old as a Blue Copper Marans. His brother was darker and had the copper on him ling ago. Is Sammy possibly a splash or is he just going to br delayed in coppering?
Call me naive, but I used to think all roosters would sound the same. And then I got chickens 🤭 I was surprised to hear different variations from each of 3 boys.
It got me wondering how many variations are there? I'd love to know what your roos and cockerels say! Here's my 3 boys:
Pedro, my...
Hi all, I have a handful of questions about raising cockerels, and I could really use some advice.
I have a great alpha Ameraucana rooster, who is just over 2 yrs old. About a year ago I had to cull his beta - a polish who was great with the hens but challenging me & the Alpha every time he...
Hi all,
2.5 yr Ameraucana Roo. Compared to my hens, his scales look rough. Is it SLM or just rooster scales? He doesn't show any symptoms or limping, he dances well for his ladies, but doesn't often outrun them when giving chase. 😉
Hi there,
I've been treating a hen with bumblefoot & I know it's good for them to have mobility & scratch as much as they are able. Sadly we get heavy frost at night and it takes all day for the grass and ground to dry. Wet bandaging would likely be worse for infection so Gracie has been...
Back again! The dark Blue Copper Marans is almost certainly a cockerel - He's huge! Way bigger than all the other chicks, even bigger than the light blue copper marans - which I'm still undecided on - perhaps some expert eyes can see better? The Barreds are also hard for me to tell. Stella -...
Hi all,
I posted pics of these 2 Blue Copper Marans a few weeks ago, and got every possible answer. Clearly too young to identify. Then about a week ago I posted their lovely pink wattles - which I figure meant both were cockerels. I'm back again, because I'm just not sure... The lighter one...
Hi all,
These are supposed to be 2 Blue Copper Marans pullets. The lighter one has a a light pink to her comb already at just under 3 weeks. The darker one's comb is black - I presume it'll change, but at what age?
I know it's early but is there any way to identify sex on them?
Hi all,
I am not sure about this one chick. 6 week old EE crosses. Pic#1 & 2 are the one in question. The others are mainly for comparison to the siblings. Pic #3 has "her" in the back and what I'm sure is a cockerel in the front. Pic#4 is "her" back, but posted in comparison to white...
Hello!
Surprise! Hen went broody 1 week after deworming the flock with safeguard. I have some eggs from pre-worming that have been sitting at room temperature for a week or 2. Which would you recommend? 7-14 day old clean eggs, or fresh eggs from hens dewormed a week ago? Or neither?
