    Growth/tumor? Something on Quail's Head

So, one of my hens has had this little growth on her head. And I just noticed today that there is a hole in the skin, and underneath its black, and looks like matted hair.... bird doesn't seem to be in distress, even when it's touched. Wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to what it is, or...

    Unique colours this time

Got a bunch of unique and New (to me) colours in my most recent hatch. They're growing into their colours quite nicely. I have mostly no idea whether they're Male or Female... one or two I have ideas. These are just a sampling from the 26 in the last clutch.

    Question regarding quail molting

I did a search but wasn't really finding my question: All my ladies, and roos, seem to be molting.... they have lots of clean feathers, but there are a ton littered around their pens. Most of my hens aren't currently laying, and haven't for several weeks.... they also keep shoving all their...

    Butchering: first time complete ****GRAPHIC****

So, I just butchered my first quail. I was planning on it eventually, but tonight it became necessary. As my newest hatch was getting older, I moved the hens into a pen with a solo older rooster... Discovered this evening when I got home that the rooster (named Duck) had quite savagely...

    A Little Morning Victory Dance

With my latest hatch: here's the details... Last chick to hatch was about 4 days behind the first, and needed help. I essentially did an egg cesarean. Now, I may have caused the problem, but was worried it wasn't going to be able to hatch on its own. Things didn't look great... it was still...

    Serial Prolapse

I have had 3 hens in the last few weeks show signs of varying degrees of prolapse. I've been trying to researching into causes to see if it is anything I am doing and what I can do to fix it. I have been treating them with witch hazel, and 2 seem to be ok, but just had the third show it today...

    Dirty toes and Bloody Birds

Question for anyone/everyone: My quail keep getting dried balls of poop stuck to their toes, encapsulating their talons. I have tried to clean them, but it usually results in bloody toes... seems like their claws either pull out or separate from the nail bed. I'm trying to avoid further...

    The Good and the Bad

Checked on the birds this morning and had a couple of surprises: good and bad: The Good: I got my first Egg! The Bad: 2 of my Roos got into a fight and one was a bit bloodied. I cleaned him up and isolated him to recover. My Hen:Roo ratio is lower than I'd like, so probably a bit too much...

Ok all, I have been searching for answers and I know there are similar threads to this, BUT, I keep seeing soo many mixed answers and opinions, I am hoping to get something more concrete: My quail are coming up on 3 weeks old, are mostly feathered right now (Heads are starting, and chests are...

    Quail chick with injured toe

I have one quail chick that looks like it has dried poop stuck to the tip of one toe. I tried to carefully break it off but it is very hard, and seemed to be causing the bird distress. Now, it is walking fine, but it looked like there was some blood underneath it, so I am thinking now it injured...

Hi all. It may be here somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding any posts that would identify what color type this little chick is... coturnix quail, almost solid cocoa brown with butter yellow... Wing feathers are coming in and it appears almost all one color, but there is minor varigation...

    White coturnix genetics issues?

I have a question for anyone who can answer... The last four eggs that have hatched, all late, have been pure white quail, and smaller than most that have hatched so far. I have also had to help 2 of them hatch as there were shell issues trapping them in. The question: is there anything in...

    Affectionate/needy chick?

We have one coturnix quail chick that will yell at us, until we pick it up, then it quiets down and twitters. Eventually, it wants down.... then it starts calling again... has anyone else experienced this? Seems healthy, eats, drinks and moves well, is just a cuddlebug.

Anyone know what the problem was?

I am just finishing up my first time Quail hatch, and I, as one would expect, had a few losses. One died on its own. And 2 I had to put down. The first one was unable to stand, kept falling on its back and unable to get up again. The second, which this is really about, never did well.. was...
