    RIP my beautiful rooster

Saturday morning a fox dug under my chain link fence and made off with my beautiful rooster. I'm sure he was doing what he does best, protecting his girls. I think the hens are in shock because I haven't gathered a single egg since. RIP RJ.

    Surprise!! Look what I did.

One of my hens went on walk about last month while we were on vacation. My husband said something must have carried her off but I didn't think so because there were no feathers or blood anywhere. Low and behold all these years I have never had any of my hens sit long enough to hatch eggs. LOOK...

    Chicken bullies

One of my hens has been injured. I'm not sure by what, but the other hens keep viciously attacking her now. I keep her in a large plastic storage box with wire on the top to keep them away from her. Is this normal chicken behavior and am I going to have to keep her away from them from now on?

    First time ducker

I just inherited 2 ducks from my son who thought it was a cute idea to buy ducklings for his babies on Easter. They have outgrown their coop and have become a nuisance at his house now they are doing the same at my house. I have plenty of room for them in my coop however; they are the...

    Over run with ants

My 3 yr. old grandson is very allergic to ant bites so I use to scan the property for ant beds and put poison bait out for the little stingers. However, I don't want to end up poisoning my chickens since they free range sometimes. Someone once told me to put out uncooked rice, the ants would eat...

How do you keep your chickens warm?

I heard on the news this morning about a barn fire caused by a heat lamp. Unfortunatly a lot of animals didn't get out. I live in FL. and 2 nights this week I had a heat lamp turned on in the coop because the temps got down to 17*. My lamp is situated on a board on the ceiling so it doesn't get...

    Making friends with my hens

What does it take, or should I ask how long does it take to make friends with my chickens. I got them when they were just a few days old and now they are about 6 or 7 weeks old and they are still crazy if I pick them up. I sit with them in the evenings so they won't feel like I'm a threat. They...

    Sad day

When I got home from work last night I went out to the coop to check on my (7) 1 month old chicks and only counted (6). When I set down the water pot something caught my eye in the corner of the room. There curled up was a rat snake with a big fat belly full of baby chick. I was so freeked out I...

    Treats for chicks

I have had my chicks since April 6th (they were probably 3 or 4 days old when I got them) and they have grown so much. They are getting feathers now and chasing moths around the coop. It's fun to watch one grab an injured moth and run as if she's running for a touchdown while the entire team is...

    Where's the Chicks???

Now that I have a coop, I can't find any chicks. I was going to order some on-line but since I'm new at this I don't want the minimum of 12. I only want to start out with 5 or 6. Every time I go to the feed store to buy them. They are sold out. I tried to order them through the store but they...

This is the back wall with the "chick exit" and the nesting boxes. This is the other side showing the cleanout door that is located under the roost. and the nesting boxes...........I hope they use them. Now I just have to wait for my chicks to arrive.
