I just slaughtered a Rhode Island Red rooster and found a very large pocket of very clear gelatinous "stuff". It kinda has me concerned. Have you ever seen anything like this? It's between the fat and muscle tissue and seems somewhat watery, but definitely not liquid.
Any ideas?
OK, I am in a pickle, please help.
I have 2 dozen eggs to hatch. A dozen are under my broody as of last night and a dozen will be hatched through an incubator getting put in today or tomorrow. Assuming a 90%+ hatch rate (I know my broody gets about 100% based on the last 2 times she was...
I've looked for integration posts, but most seem to either be addressing disease or chicks. I have recently (couple months) lost over half my flock to dog attacks, so I am buying some hens from not too far away. They sound like they raise their chickens like I do, Scott-free eating what they...
With warm weather the momma is more than happy to take her babies out. Makes me nervous! BUT, VERY cute.
Hope you enjoyed them. I'm amazed she is willing to take them out soooo young.
Will poison ivy affect chickens and/or chicks? My broody couldn't get the chicks back in the coop this afternoon and decided to nest down in a whole BUNCH of poison ivy.
Is this a problem?
I've got 8 hatched of 9 eggs under a broody. They all hatched between yesterday morning and this morning. The last egg pipped this morning, but still no hatchling.
Momma hen still hasn't given up and is desperate to get that baby hatched. I picked it up and held it to my ear and could swear I...
I've got new arrivals - just hatched between yesterday morning and this morning. After sitting just a little while, they all got active and curious.
You can't see me!!
Peek-a-boo
I See You!
Hey, we wanna play too
You two! Get back under there
Can someone help me keep these chicks...
My chickens are still young (they hatched last November), so they are barely laying medium sized eggs. 23 days ago I had one go broody, so after some research I grabbed 12 eggs from the fridge let them sit out for a day and then put them under her. After some issues (neighbors kids, neighbor's...
This is my first year (month 6 or so now) with chickens. My first broody is hatching today, already got one out!
I can tell she's gonna be a good momma! Despite being the smallest of my hens by a good 25-30% she is ultra protective, won't let anyone pick (peck) on her and when they get too...
I've got a broody that's been sitting since the night of May 5th. I've had some issues though. I had a strange rooster show up scaring the whole flock and she was on the roof of the coop for an unknown amount of time. I also moved her nest as she was being run off by other chickens not liking...
The neighbor (a few houses down) apparently has a rooster. We found him this morning terrorizing our flock. He is a little phoenix apparently a few years old as he has a 2 and half inch spur (my 6 month olds don't even have spurs, just nubs). So, he's half the weight of the smallest of my three...
So I've got a broody, she's only been broody for about 3 days and has had eggs for 2 days. She's half bantam, but is still 3/4 normal size, so she's probably not at the top of the pecking order.
So, today I noticed that I guess one of the other hens had enough of her protectiveness and kicked...
I have a barred rock mutt that just went broody last night. She has puffed up and growled at me for several days, but just decided to stay in the nest last night. So far she has set on her golf balls since then except to get some food for a quick second.
She was hatched last november, so this...
I only have a .17HMR rifle and need to rid myself of some stray dogs that have attacked my chickens several times. Where would be the best place to aim my shot? I'll likely be shooting at 75 yards or less and I can place groups within about 2" at that range (I need some practice!!).
The dogs...
I have lost 4 hens in 4 days, but only two at a time. So I lost 2 then none then 2 again today. I have had dog attacks in the past and they left feathers from the chickens fighting and the chickens hid for hours. This time was again mid-day, but not a feather to be found. The other chickens...
I've noticed that when the hens get out and I put them back over the fence there is a particular rooster always waiting for them. The second the hit the ground he jumps on top and mated them? What is this - some kind of sadistic punishment for leaving the flock? (My hens aren't reall...
I just went out to check on my hens, since it's been raining all day long. They all were out in the field soaking and dripping wet hunting, pecking, scratching, and all. They seemed real happy.
Do yours do this too?
Once they start laying how long till production reaches one a day each or close? I've got barnyard mutts that just started laying. They're mainly Barred Rock, Black Sex-Link, Buff Orpington, and a Black Australorp.
I've just started getting eggs and today is the first day I got two eggs...
I've got several hens (15) all hatched within a day or so. They are several different breeds (barred rock, dominique cross, sex link, australorp, and buff orpingtom. So, they just started laying this week. I've gotten 3 eggs this week all about 2-3 days apart. Please take a look at the picture...
