Our precious Silkie just decided she wants BABIES!! And has been collecting her (and everyone elses eggs) for a few days now. (We just hatched out 6 eggs in the incubator and have 6 healthy chicks hanging out in the house) SO my questions are, Do I remove her from the rest of the flock? - 4...

    Does "fighting" mean a roo?

Okay so our cute little chicks are now 4-5 weeks old and we couldn't be happier with them except..... Out of 20 of them I think (as a newbie to chickens) that 10 or 11 are roosters? What are the chances? Before my children (and I) become even more attached to them, Does "fighting" mean it's a...

    Goofy Question???

Will an Easter egger roo try to mate with a silkie hen? and would the egg be to big for the silkie hen to lay? We just hatched and purchased our first chickies and thinking we have a few roos and hens on our hands and want to be prepared for when they are bigger. Like, do they need to have...

    Chicken math

I just wanted to say that after hatching 10 chicks of our own my son decided he wanted "a few more" so we'd have a better chance of getting hens. I took him to get 5 more and he came home with 10. So I just wanted to let everyone know that chicken math works good for 9 yr olds too.

Missing toe or just a nail?

I have a Silkie that hatched yesterday AM and he has 2 missing toes..or maybe just a toenail? Either way the little one doesn't have 3 "long" toes on each foot like his siblings. As I've been reading this is kinda a "norm" for Silkies?? He seems to walk okay but when he's standing still getting...

    Chick won't come out!

So we had 3 chicks pip, zip and hatch all within a short amount of time. But we have one that pipped, zipped most of the way (beak is clear of egg) but it's just not kicking out of the egg. It's been like this most of the day, should we be worrying?? I have another in there that's pipped so I...

    First hatch, fisrt chick today!

We just watched out first chick hatch (one I thought for sure I shrink wrapped) but turns out was just resting up for the big day?? My question now is the temp in the incubator is all over the place. It spiked up to 102 then dropped to 98.6 but the humidity has been staying the same at 65%. Do I...

    How do you STAND this!!

Hatching for the first time and tonight is Day 19/20 we have heard peeping and 2 eggs are pipped. I fear I screwed up the first pip - the temp was up to 102 and the humidity was 70% in an LG still air w/o fan - so I took of the windows to let some heat/humidity out and SMELLED something. (We put...

So we are due to go into lockdown on Thursday, well at least for 1/2 our eggs... We set the first 17 on a Sunday (March 6) and the other 18 on Monday (March 7) both were in the afternoon. So my question is, When do we go into lockdown? Late Thursday? Friday afternoon??? (Using LG still air...

So we are on Day 14 and this waiting thing is KILLING us!! (My kids and I) So we did a little candling just to see how "our babies" were doing. Well we have 2 eggs that look like they have no veining on the bottom of the egg. They have an air cell at the top, a wiggling "thing" in the middle and...

GroGel vs Chick starter? or same thing?

Hi all! I am new to this and have been spying on this site for a while now. Finally placed our eggs on March 6 and are doing the count down. I read for HOURS on how to incubate them and am happy to report I have seen "swimming" chicks in a few of the eggs I was brave enough to candle. I'm not...
