Psychotic Chicks. Tell me about temperment...

I gave 23 of our eggs to a friend and schoolteacher who hatched 20 of them! They are purebred RIRs and RIR mutts w/ either brahma, black star, or ? They are all, of course, simply lovely, except for the fact that they are the most uptight, angry, active, boisterous, roostery acting chicks on...

What are the odds? Creating some Rhode Island Reds!

I have a friend who wants to hatch out some eggs for a school project. I, of course, have eggs. Question #1. I have 16 hens and one very busy RIR Roo (if you know what I mean). What are the odds that the eggs I collect are fertilized? I've read that I can't know for sure, short of opening...

    TSC Plastic Waterer leaks. Sigh

It's not the chickens bumping it (they do), it's a slow steady drip drip around the seal between the white tank and the red base (it's the 3 1/2 gallon waterer. It got especially bad when I tried to put a floating watering puck in there, but it leaks w/o it. Leaks when hanging so I put it on...

First egg is a double-yoker. A good sign?

Our first batch of chickens (ever) includes Minerva (a dominique) and she started laying this week. We are keeping the day 1 egg for posterior's sake but the day two egg was a double-yoke. I know it's bad luck to be superstitious, but we're hoping this is a good sign. She's also laying her...

Polish roo getting picked bald? And he likes it?!

Our Polish Roo (3 months?) has what looks like a bloody bald spot on the top of his head. Saw the other chickens pecking at it and the Roo didn't seem to mind the pecking. Don't know if the pecking is causing the troubles or if something else is up. I can't imagine they are picking on him --...

Nesters... modular cubicles or private offices?

The nesting boxes I'm building are designed as a three story unit w/ two flats per floor. As it is currently configured there are no dividers between the flats on each floor (or, there are no stalls in the bathrooms, so to speak). Now I'm stealing the dish pan method (I saw posted by another...

Coop Closet -- Advice before it's too late!

I want an "entry way" into my 8X12 hen house. The main door is in the middle of the end (8ft) and I intend to wall/wire off a little square about 4X6 -- restricted access, no chickens allowed. I'm doing this for a number of reasons. Keep the feed and chicken supplies from getting poopy, etc...

tin roof tricks -- any pros out there?

I'm thinking about doing a corrugated tin roof -- they sell the stuff in 8 ft sheets, just right for my roof. But the plastic stuff and the ondura/asphalt stuff all has foam inserts to make screwing the stuff down easier (less likely to dent the roofing) and keep wasps from building nests in...

Sexing by leg behavior and the chicken trance.

So the "chicken lady" at my local farm supply said that you can sex chickens fairly well by flipping them on their backs and watching thier legs. Roos, she said, will pull their legs tight against thier bodies. Hens might pull them up when you flip them, but eventually they will relax the legs...

    Contest for the worst run?

We're just giving them some air until the official coop is finished. The chickens were really my idea, but the kids, including the teens have warmed to it nicely, as you can see by this daughter who volunteered to be the "chicken invigilator."

Why mail order? What's the advantage?

Pals told me they were making an order from one of the big hatcheries so I joined in. $3.10 a chick w/ shipping. That shipment won't come till May, so we went to the local farm supply and picked from a bunch of fun varieties and they were between $3 and $3.50 a chick. Then TSC got in a bunch...

    Efficient Coop Dimensions

I'm getting ready to build and I've heard some newbies (like myself) getting gently chastized for coops that are 4 3/4 by 16.2342415. Math is not my forte (or even my pianissimo) so in simple terms (or just tell me) what are the efficient dimensions are. 8X8? 10X12? Square? And I suppose...

Quick!! The chicken lady called, what should we get?!

We had a bunch of breeds picked out for our first chickens ever (standard, good layers) but the order is mixed up and now our choices are limited to these... auracanas, dominiques, light brahamas, cochins, speckled sussex, golden and silvery wynadots, black sex link. The auracanas were already...

Whose chickens these are, I think I know...

What a great website! I've learned tons. Thanks. We moved out into the country a couple years ago and pals from church have been telling us our purpose in life will only be fulfilled once we own chickens. So here we go. We have put our order (splitting a box of 25 from Murray w/ the church...
