    broody silkie.. I think?

Okay.. new to this. I got my chicks in the spring, and they are now starting to lay. I have 9 (6 RIR, 1 australop, 1 buff orp and my grey silkie). A couple are laying on a regular basis now, including the Silkie. I know Silkies are notorious for going broody from what I've read. So how do I...

Go inside at night for goodness sake!

The girls have been in the new coop / run for about a week now. Each morning they are waiting at the door to be let out. The first few days I had to physically move them outside. Now they all run out the door to face the day. However, each night I am having to go an take them one at a time and...

    Snake!

So.. not sure if this is the correct place to post. Anyhow. The girls have been in their coop for about a week or so now. They are going on 8 weeks and doing great! I just finished the "basics" of their run today, which means I have the whole thing covered in 2 x 4 welded wire. Starting...

    Silkie question about roosts

I moved my girls out to the coop about a week or so ago and am almost done with their run. Everyone seems to be using the roosts I have at different levels and loving them, except for my one Silkie. Do Silkies not like to use roosts? She should have no problem getting up to even the lowest one...

    Question... kinda off topic

Sorry for posting here.. it's not technically about a coop. Does anyone know how to edit / change the "Subject" of a post, say when you update it with picture or something? Thanks.

    Roo Roo??

Got 6 chicks from the "red pullet" bin at Tractor store. Monday will be week 6. I think I got a Roo...blah. Chime in and let me know what you think. I'm noticing the comb turning red and the others aren't. Of course, I'm new to this so I'm hoping I'm wrong so I don't have to get rid of Dottie /...

    need advice about wire

Next big purchase (unfortunately) will be all the wire / fencing I need. I don't have any I can recycle. So on that note..... 1.) What should I be using to screen in the coop vents / windows? (gauge and wire type). 2.) What should I use for the main fencing on the run? (gauge and wire type) 3.)...

to paint or not to paint

First coop... getting close to being done. Does painting the inside of the coop really help with keeping it clean? Is it worth the time / expense? Seems that chickens are pretty dirty, in the long run the coop will still get dirty, so should I bother?

coop started! with pics - UPDATED.. IT'S DONE@!!!!!

First time chicken owner, and it's been an adventure so far. The girls are going on 4 weeks, so I thought I might want to start building somewhere to GET THEM OUT OF THE SUNROOM!!! I've never really built anything but have a few criteria for my coop / run. It has to have great ventilation...

    ideas about shade

I'm in the process of building my coop. I live in Georgia, so cold / snow isn't an issue. What is an issue is the sweltering heat and humidity we get here. July and August are miserable! Since I don't need to worry as much about cold I'm going to make my coop have as much ventilation and shade...

    is this normal or weird?

I've had my first set of girls going on week three. First time chicken owner so I'm learning all their crazy behaviors! Today they started doing something odd. I pulled up a clump of grass for them to snack on. The went crazy and seems to be loving it. I went to check on them and they are all...

    chest thumping

My chicks are running up and thumping their chests against each other. Is this normal? Are they just trying to establish a pecking order or does this mean I'm going to end up with a bunch of roos? It's funny watching it!

    how high?

I'm building my first coop!!! The girls should be ready to go out in it about 4 weeks from now. I'm doing a 4 x 8 raised 32 inches off the ground. I'm going to do a lean to type roof (easier for me to build) and am trying to decide how high the roof should be to give the girls room to roost. Is...

coop roof - gable versus lean to shed

Getting ready to build my first coop. Wondering a couple of things.... 1.) Anyone know of any pros / cons of a gabled or barn type roof versus a lean to shed type roof? 2.) Is corrugated metal okay for the roof or does it get to hot? I'm in Georgia. 3.) Windows - should I put a UV film over the...

    Size Matters :-)

What sizes does a brooder need to be for 6 chicks. I'm worried my 2 week old girls are crowded. Maybe it's just me. And can they stay in the same brooder until the go outside.... and when I say outside... that assumes I get off my butt and out into this cold and build them somewhere to live...

Shed Kit / Build from scratch

Anyone use either of these. Decent prices and I could use wood / junk from around the house to add roosts, nest boxes, more windows, vents, etc. Also.. my original idea was to build a coop elevated about 2 - 3 feet off the ground. Any pros / cons between a raised coop and a "shed" coop...

    chicken math - help

Hi, I laying out how I would like to build my first coop / run and am trying to be efficient in my planning so as to cut down on waste. I have an area that is 18 ft. by 12 ft. and here my thought... I want to build a raised coop (cleaning, saving my lower back, etc.), so underneath the coop...
