My first chicks will be a year old in may, when should I think about getting more so that they come into production when these start to slump off?

I love letting my chickens free range. esp since they make their way to the barn and clean up spilt feed
However they are destroying my flower beds.
I really don't want to restrict them to their fenced pen but I have invested a lot of time and money in our landscaping

I am working on my coop and plan on having 21 birds. I am trying to figure our how big of a feeder I need and I would like it big enough were I only have to fill it once a day or every other. I bought a hanging one that says it will work for 15-30 birds, and hubby made the smart comment "yeh...
I am planning on giving my 21 hens a huge run about 100ft x 50ft which works out to 238sqft/bird
my question is will they turn the whole area to dirt or is that enough space/bird that the grass will be able to keep up.
