There are many people on this forum that look into Great Pyranees, Anatolian Shepherds, etc. for guarding poultry. People get mixed results, as these dogs were meant to guard larger livestock. Most people are unaware there is a dog breed bred specifically to protect chickens. I was, too, until...
I am going to start some alfalfa later in my sprouter. I can take a picture if anyone is interested.
I think I will get some mung beans and sunflowers to try next. It's a good way to get greens even in the winter or when the rest of your garden has failed for some reason.
I have heard on here about chocolate swedes and other rare, non-standard colors. I don't have any of those, but I do have a silver female and a splash male.
The Splash Male, George
The Silver Female, Pearl
I think Silver Swedes are very pretty. I like the dark bill and bright feet...
Yesterday I noticed my goose had his neck scrunched up and was looking kind of swollen in the front. He was acting a little depressed (Very quiet, barely following me around- not normal) so I gave him some dandelion leaves and flowers (his favorite). Later (sometime within 3 hours or so) I went...
Hello,
One of our ducks went broody and long-story short, we have multiple ducklings.
Three are clearly black, two are clearly blue, one is obviously silver and the other one is hard to tell.
It's a buff and yellow color with lots of orange on his bill- it's colored a lot like an American...
Originally we had 6 male ducks and 4 females - or that's what we thought, anyway. In the past few months, one of our adult males had started making a funny noise- somewhere between the girl's quack and the boy's whisper ("Quaaah..." ). He didn't do it very much though. But today he was quacking...
Hello :)
I have started raising mealworms. However the way I was taught to raise them would - according to some misconceptions I have read - have killed them. They are doing fine. I thought I would share because some people are accidentally killing their beetles.
The misconception I noticed is...
It snowed a couple of days ago and I found some footprints I did not recognise. The prints are divided into two parts: toes and what I think is either the pad of the foot or maybe the back foot. It has four toes that are spread out a bit - it's not a paw-like foot at all. Tiny claw marks are...
I just uploaded a picture to my profile of a strange wild bird (the bird perched on a branch over the pond algae). Maybe one of you birdwatchers know its identity. It stopped by at our pond one day years ago and hasn't returned. It was in the summer in CT. We were wondering what it was. Thanks :)
Help!
We have a mink & weasel problem in our area. I heard a commotion outside (honking, quaking and hissing), only to go out and find a mink had dug under the fence and was attempting to have duck lunch!
Besides good fencing, does anyone know of a tried and true repellent for keeping the...
Edit: They weren't there, but it turns out those pictures are from last winter, not this winter so not surprising. Still, are these pure or mixed breed geese? (PS: I did see what I think was a Khaki Campbell drake, though- why do people get animals if they can't take care of them!? )

We had a surprise today...
When my kids went out to put our 10 Blue Swedish ducks and 2 Buff geese in for the night they found a small female (we think) mallard.
She isn't afraid of humans, so I don't think she's wild. She flew over our fence (scared the heck out of our flightless flock)...
These are new photos of our Blue Swedish ducks (6 weeks old) and our American Buff geese (5 weeks old).
The duck on the far right with black where his white bib should be is "Snape" (yes, from Harry Potter because he's so dark).
So that's our little flock who keep us entertained...
My teen is turning 16 and she wanted geese for her birthday... so here are Pancake(female) and Flapjack (male), her two American Buff goslings we purchased from Metzer Farms in CA.
They are sooooooooooo friendly and sweet! And much less messy than the 10 duckings we have!
Oh dear... our week old Blue Swedish ducklings (10 of them) didn't take well to the introduction of our new 3 day old goslings. The poor little goslings were attacked and pecked by all the ducklings! I had hoped to raise these little ones all together, but I don't think that is going to work...
We've recently noticed a weasel family near our property where our ducklings will be in about a month's time. Our ducks will be free ranging on a natural pond, but the entire area has a 4 ft wire fence around it. My question is, how much of a danger are weasels to ducks that have a large...
Our 10 Blue Swedish ducklings having their first bath at 6 days old. They LOVED the water first time in. Not one of them was afraid or tried to get out. They splashed and dunked themselves having a great time.
Now they are all dry and look so much cleaner and VERY fluffy! LOL Too darn cute!!
