I am new to roos but have some older hens as well...2.5. My roo (I have two, but only one that has come into his own so far) is just getting his spurs and feeling rather 'randy' lately...I have watched him quite a bit and with most hens, he does his business and leaves them alone. I just caught...
We are piecing together our flock from different places, different times. I have only ever gotten mine all at one time before and they were the same ages. We have some that are around a week old now, am getting some day olds tomorrow possibly, some week olds at the end of the week and new babies...
My mom got her first babies and we would love to know what breeds they are. We got them today at Atwoods (farm store) in the mixed breeds section (straight run..ACK!)
Will number them so you can help out. If we need better pics, we can get those for you too.
#1 (my daughter is desperately...
Quick history, I have a 100% blind chicken...we love her to death. She is so sweet and thinks she's human. I have a RIR that she was raised with. When they first started laying (they are 10 months old now), the RIR started pecking at the blind one. Would come across the yard specifically to give...
I looked through the past threads on feather loss, but mine doesn't fit in any other category so far. My girls are about 10.5 months old and are great layers. They had fowl pox about 2 months ago but are better now. My girls (no roo and not any that are particularly bossy) are loosing feathers...
I have pictures, but I can't post them right this second. Quick history...it has been raining and raining....complete downpours with several inches of rain every day. My chicken coop has been a muddy mess. My husband has done everything he can to divert water. They DO have a dry place to go...
I think I want to try the Deep litter method for our coop/run. The problem I'm having problem to wrap my mind around is when you remove it in a year or so...is it completely broken down so that I can use it as 'dirt' compost? I was planning on using pine shavings for this method. It seems like...
You guys will remember last week I asked you about a sleepy girl then asked if they can be blind. I'm 100% certain that she is blind now.
I noticed right away that she had a cross on her head. She had a rough start at life. I wasn't sure she would make it that first 3 days. She was a very...
I posted a couple of days about about my sleepy chick. She's off and on ok. Some hours she's up and walking around and eating, but other hours...when everybody else is up and moving around, she is sound asleep. I just don't know what's up. Honestly? I think she is blind. She bumps into...
Ok, I jumped the gun just a bit on buying the chicks. I live in a neighborhood (that does allow chickens) but my yard is only so big...
We were going to build a tractor, but one for 8 chicks would be too hard for me to move around, I think. I was sitting outside giving them some outside time...
I have one Barred Rock that is 2.5ish weeks old. She seems overly sleepy. She is my daughter's favorite because she can be handled b/c she doesn't try to get away. She's super cuddly, etc. However, I'm noticing all she does is sleep. My daughter says she does eat and drink, but I'm not so sure...
We are starting our small flock (5-8 hens) very very soon and my husband is starting to plan the coop and run. Does each hen need it's own roosting box? Can all share maybe 4 or 5 roosting boxes?
Another question. My husband has an idea to use 5 gallon buckets on the outside of the coop for...
We are thinking of getting a small backyard flock soon and I'm busy researching breeds, coops, etc. Having fun doing it for sure!!
Can't wait to talk more with you guys!
