Hi! It's been a while since I posted. Hope everyone survived the hot, hot summer. I lost a couple older hens this summer - I think it was just too **** hot for them. I'm interested in the poultry swap as a way to get rid of some roosters...
Has anyone here ever sold their roosters to Geren's...
Hi to all the new people! I am probably new to all because I go through long periods of not posting a thing. Anyway, thought I'd duck in and see what's new around here!
Hey Ekim - where in SEPDX are you? I'm assuming outside the limits of any city ordinances limiting you to 3 chickens. I'm in...
>triple antibiotic with pain killer
I have always been told (and have seen throughout this forum) that you're only supposed to use the triple antibiotic without the painkiller in it. Can anyone confirm?
Great and thorough list, btw!
The first time we hatched out (1 broody momma, 7 chicks hatched) I used Payback Organic chick starter. We did lose two chicks, but neither to cocci - one fell out of the nest box before we had secured it and died from being chilled, and the other had pasty butt/failure to thrive. The rest were...
Elida, you should go to the Incubating & Hatching Eggs section of the forum for more information about hatching out eggs. To hatch out your own brood you either need a broody hen (and if yours are laying eggs and not sitting on the next 24/7 they are not broody), or an incubator to do it...
fezlet, I'm so sorry! I joined BYC right around the time you found Floyd and I loved following your story. I'm so sorry about your home and your kitty, and hope your neighbor does right by your family.
We don't have any serious problems here either, stony. She has hatched out 2x in the main coop and the only issues have been the other hens adding their contributions to the nest. My one problem this go-round was a broken egg in all the jostling of other hens climbing on board.
I haven't posted here in a while, so it has been fun to catch up on all the goings on! We just had two broodies hatch out over the last week. Our Australorp Weezy is now a second time momma, with a brood of seven healthy, active chicks. We put 12 eggs under here, lost two to other hen activity...
I've been through three broody hatches, and I just let them be. Just this last time we ended up with a chick that didn't make it all the way out, but the rest of the eggs (that didn't turn out to be duds) have developed and hatched just fine. I'm a firm believer in the "hands off" policy. Your...
Yes they are nocturnal. If they have a food source, they will keep coming back. As far as I know, raccoons aren't illegal to kill - our neighbor killed a couple just the other week. My only concern would be if there you live in an area with any ordinances prohibiting you from firing a gun...
You said it! We're really in the barnyard mutt business, occasionally I adopt a "retired" hen of a specific breed from Zenger Farm, but one of these days I might have to break down and get myself a couple Lavender Orps.
Welcome, Newbies! I'm not a frequent poster on BYC, but it has come in...
Roosters aren't gentle by any stretch, but in my flock it's been the hens working out their pecking order that leads to the most lost feathers and scrapes. In fact, I saw one hen pecking the side of another hen's head while that one was being "serviced" by our roo. Talk about adding insult to...
I would isolate the sick chicken, keep any other chickens from accessing the manure, and call an avian vet. Puffed up and lethargic can be a zillion different things. I have a puffed up lethargic bird right now who has sour crop, so I have her isolated and am treating her as best I can with...
I'm sorry, I have no experience with this. I hope your friend's chickens pull through. Can she isolate the sick one and keep the rest from the manure pile to see if that might be what is causing it?
Also - any other specific symptoms other than "off?"
OMG I love your girls! And I would absolutely take them off your hands if we had room. Actually, we would have room if I can find homes for two roos...
We're looking to rehome two roosters from a brood we hatched out on September 11, 2011. Of the five chicks, we netted two pullets and three...

So Sorry, I went brain dead for a moment heatherkh and did not understand you I guess. The info I put up is good anyway and explains how a infection like Coccidiosis is so serious and devastating to an entire flock young and old. Please accept my apologies.
No worries, Steve. And yes...
