I use a large heated dog bowl. Fill it about 2/3 full and place the lid from a plastic 5 gallon bucket on top. Then set your regular plastic gravity type waterer on the lid. I keeps the water warm enough to stay thawed on all but the very coldest days and no worries about getting heads in...
2 weeks ago a coon got into my coop and killed 3 of my 5 hens. 1 of the remaininh hens, a BO, was injured but is doing fine now.
Neither of the remaing hens has laid since that night. Any idea how long it might be before they start to lay again?
Just as a side note...We have trapped and killed 3...
Not sure where this should be posted so I guess I'll try here...
I was given a lovely little silkie hen but 2 of my older hens just will not accept her. I would like to place her with other silkies NOT with other big hens who will treat her badly. If anyone has silkies they think will accept her...
Wish you were closer to Altoona. I need to find a home for a nice little silkie hen. My big girld just do not like her and I think other silkies might be the best place for her.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. I took a big dog crate out and put in their run. Put food, water a perch, some straw and the silkie in there. I did not let the big girls out to free range. Now I just have to remember to cover part of the crate later since she can't go find shade. Of course...
Haven't been on here in a while...but I need some advice.
My step-daughter bought me a young Silkie pullet for step Mothers Day.
I have 6 other hens. 3 are 4 year old Bubbies and 3 are a year old. 2 sex links and a leghorn mix.
I waited till the big girls all went in to roost the first night...

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac if you preserve an egg that's laid on Good Friday it will protect your flock all year....I wonder how you are supposed to preserve it?
Either pour concrete or put patio stones under the entrance to the door. I don't have my fence buried but I do have 24" patio stones butted up againts the edge of my fence the whole way around the outside.

Yep, sure am and peppers too.
I have WHAT in my yard? :
NO snow for us but bitter cold and extremely windy. I keep looking at the property and seeing the millions of small branches that will need to be picked up. That and I swore that I was going to get the grape arbor trimmed this winter (You're supposed to do it in Jan)...
