I want to build a coop. I think I can handle most of it but getting started is tripping me up.
Here's the deal:
I want the coop off the ground so I had planned on putting Four 4"x4" posts in the ground then mounting the floor on top of that. The posts would be 12-18" high off the ground and...
I looked closely today and saw small spur nubs. His legs are much thicker than equally sized game hens he hangs with most of the time. These are things I never looked at before. Learned a lot.
I just hope he eventually has a really nice, colorful saddle. It really adds a lot to his appearance...
Took some pics today. You guys are right. Now that I know what to look for you can clearly see his saddle developing. He's such a sissy though. All the hens that were there before him peck at him and just jumps 2 feet in the air and squeals. No sign of crowing.
I think with all that...
If true when will he reach sexual maturity and start mating and will he fight with the other rooster?
The lack of comb and waddle threw me too.
this is my rooster

First pic is right after I bought her from the feed store. They said it was a she.
I have noticed those long neck feathers as seen in the last two pics. That's the hackle, right? She (he?) will raise up with her two game hen buddies as if they are going to fight but they never...
My EE mix pullet has added color in the last month. See pic.
Top pic was a month ago. Look at her head and neck then look at the bottom pic taken last week. She's added orange to her head, neck and back. It's very odd. She's about 6 months old. Is this normal?
Someone said cockerels do this...
I got a weird EE/Ameraucana mix this summer with mostly grey/dark brown feathers. She was about 2 months old.
Recently as she has gotten older and the cold weather has started up she seems to be added a new color. It's a gold or orange color.
You can see it in her neck, top of her head and a...
shes about 6 months. i call her ugly betty. blue-grey with brown. is it ameraucana or EE mix?
she looks funny with her longggggggggggg next extended
her legs are hard to describe. blue-green maybe
I love it. I am not a carpenter so this looks relatively easy to build and is exactly what I had in mind when thinking of how I want to build my coop right down to the sloped, overhanging roof covering the nest boxes.
wow you guys really know your stuff.
she has one small dot of a comb and really black legs. what color eggs will she lay? i estimate she's about 4 months old.
thanks
Guy at the feed store said it was a game hen. Looks like a mutt to me. EE mix or something what do you think? The camera flash really highlites the colors in her feathers. In the light of day she looks almost entirely black fwiw.
oh layer the frames on each other. i don't see the difference though. make two 2x2 frames with cloth over the top of each. the grass will grow through it either way but you will have two instead of one.
They get crushed oyster shell but the only grit they get is whatever they get from the run. I don't actually buy grit. Not sure how to supply them with grit.
I throw grass in there, pick greens from fields behind the pen, give them scraps from the table, give them sunflower seeds, suet, throw...
Well I can't plant anything in the run they will eat it destroy it in no time. Maybe I could plant some bushes outside the run.
I do throw scratch in the run.
I also have a dust pit full of dirt/sand. Funny, the other day I added sand after a heavy rain had washed a lot of the dirt away...
I share the coop/run with my dad. He absolutely refuses to let them free range but he said I can let mine birds free range. I know there are predators but I just feel like they aren't getting everything out of life they could if they were free ranging. Their nature is to forage through grass...
