    slugs!

This past autumn I had containers out with beer to catch slugs at night. in the morning there were a number of slugs caught but I left the containers as is to catch a few more before I replaced the beer. The next day all of the dead slugs were gone! I ruled out the dog and chickens as the...

    Broody Hen Thread!

THanks. I kinda thought it would be up to the hens. I don't want to cause any stress as the mother hens are doing so well. I have options/space to keep them separate so I think that is the best option.

    Broody Hen Thread!

I'm new to this thread and have a question......I have one hen with a chick that hatched a week ago in a small nursery coop. I have another broody hen in another coop sitting on 4 eggs which if viable should hatch in a week. I want to raise the chicks together because I only have the one...

    Breathing difficulties

Anyone have any thoughts on what could be causing breathing difficulties in an otherwise healthy 3 year old sussex bantam hen? She was normal until yesterday when I noticed her breathing was noisy and labored. Yesterday it seemed like putting her head down to eat was uncomfortable so she...

Mixing bantams with standard size hens

i have 4 Banrevelder bantams (1 is a rooster) and 2 light sussex bantam hens. I'm thinking of getting some more hens but would like to get some standard sized ones for bigger eggs. Can I keep all the birds together in one run (it's about 8 ft x 25 ft). I'm assuming that there will be a bit of...

    Scaly Leg Mites

Thanks for the info. Hens are all mite free. I now put a bit of the mite powder in their bedding as a preventative measure for mites of any kind.

    Baby chick with mites

put the powder in the area where the chicks/hen take dustbaths as they will dust themselves with it too. I've used powder in their bedding as well to keep the mites out of the coop. Seems to have worked so far. Good luck!

Help! Broody has mite infestation, what to do?

I had a mite infestation with my hens and had to treat them all with a powder that was like grey talcum powder. I was made of crushed coral which is harmless to the hens but like cut glass to the mites. It was easy to do - hold the hen and work the powder between the feathers right to the...

    Scaly Leg Mites

I thought one of my hens had bumblefoot and treated it with an antibiotic spray. This didn't help any and now that I've searched the sight a bit I realise that she most likely has scaly leg mites! This has been going on for some time and I feel bad not figuring it out sooner. Fortunately it...

    Rooster keeps head down

This experience has made me very aware that there are so many possible health problems with hens and I'm not informed enough about them. When a hen is poorly, it's important to know what it is as soon as possible in order to get treatment started. Just like with kids - if your child has a...

    My chicken is being attacked

Do you have any idea why they are pecking at her? Is she ill in any way? When we got our initial 2 hens & rooster we noticed one had an eye infection. The other two seemed to peck at her and we figured it was because of the infection - they were trying to get rid of the possible threat to the...

    Rooster keeps head down

RIP Chico! Tried feeding our Chico with yogurt and bread soaked in water which he ate a little of. Finally took him to the vet 3 days after my initial concern and they thought that the mites could have gotten into the brain and nervous system. In case it was an injury they gave him an...

    roosters head droopsI

I have a rooster that's been doing the same thing for 2 days now. When he does get the energy to crow it's not his usual crow. It's almost like he has something in his throat - like a sore throat! I noticed an almost microscopic mite on him yesterday but on closer examination didn't find any...

    Rooster keeps head down

How do I do a molasses or epsom flush? I've read that if it is botulism then I shouldn't give water or food if it's not eating as it may go into the lungs and cause pneumonia. Not sure what to do. I'll separate him and keep him comfortable for the time being.

    Rooster keeps head down

There doesn't seem to be any injury to his neck or otherwise. Although his neck feathers do seem puffed out a bit, more so than usual. I fed him some yogurt and a bit of water. He enjoyed the yogurt but only ate about 1/2 tsp or less. He had a little life in him after eating the yogurt but...

    Rooster keeps head down

HELP!!! Yesterday I noticed my 3 1/2 yr. old rooster standing on a log in a sheltered sun spot with his head drooping down below his legs and I thought sleeping. I thought it was just a bit of R&R while he let the other rooster keep an eye on the flock. But today I noticed that he is...

PLEASE HELP cats using my garden for their toilet!!!!!!!!!

Quote: I've heard this works too but not sure why. Our neighbours cats seemed to think our yard and the wild birds were theirs too. The neighbours attitude was that "cats roam and are natural hunters". As we like the birds and dislike the cat "tootsie rolls" we scared it out of the yard...

Does anyone have some encouraging words? Going through a rough patch..

I am sorry for all your woes. They do seem overwhelming. Talking about them is a good start - "a problem shared is a problem halved" is pretty accurate a lot of the time. Keep talking (or in the case of this forum - typing) and remember that death is a natural part of life. Sometimes a...
