    Moulting=Neurotic?

    I have a RIR hen who recently went through moult. Previously, she had been scratched up pretty well by the rooster. Ever since she finished, she has been acting very neurotic. She hides out during the day, although she still goes in the coop to lay & sleep. When she is rousted from her...

    Moulting=Neurotic?

    I have a RIR hen who went through moult a few months ago. She was scratched up pretty good by the rooster previously. Since she has gone through this, she has refeathered & is gorgeous. The only problem is she acts neurotic. She hides during the day under my mower. When she's rousted out...

    Question about adding chicken hens to a flock that free ranges all day.

    I keep my new ones in a tractor next to the coop. The old ones get to see the new ones all the time, just cant get to them. After awhile, I begin letting the new ones out & leave the tractor door open. The new ones usually roost in the tractor, then one day they will begin to roost in the...

    Can a chicken lay a tiny egg?

    I've had that happen also. I think it's my SLW pullet that should be laying now. I've had about 6 of those small eggs in the last 2 weeks. Should they be getting bigger?

    Adding new chicks to a flock

    I have used this formula with success. I keep chicks in the brooder until feathered enough to put outside. I have a free ranging flock with a coop with an automatic door. I also have a 4x8 chicken tractor. I put the pullets in the tractor & the established chickens look them over & get used...

    Steel fowlcatcher--use

    I got one of those steel fowl catchers. I hope I'm not showing my ignorance, but I thought you used it to catch your chickens by the foot. Every time I do that, the chicken just flips her foot backwards & gets out. I guess I need some instructions.

    Questions about laying hens and hatching hens

    I have to agree with most of the others. Although if your wife thinks she is eating a baby chicken by eating an egg that may be fertilized, then maybe hatching & raising chickens isn't your thing. Another hobby maybe should be in order. Does she not eat beef because the cow may have been...

    Automatic Chicken Door Opener

    Hey, I built one using a car antenna. Got it off ebay for cheap. I've got mine on a timer & it works great. Easy to build, but you will need access to 120vac for antenna. Contact me for details. Ken

    Automatic Coop Door (your thoughts...?)

    I have built & installed an automatic door on my coop using the car antenna. It works great, 100% of the time. A power failure can cause problems, such as opening/closing late. It is relatively easy to build/install, & priced right. If you need details on how to build one, email me at...

    Automatic doors, dusk and lighting?

    Built my own. Used existing door & wired up a electric car antenna to open & close the door. Have it on timer & opens early & closed about dark. Chickens have been better about roosting up before dark.

    New babies from TSC

    This forum won't let you post pics until they determine you can. Has something to do with spammers. I've been a member since last sept., & I'm still listed as a "new egg", & can't post pics.

    Wheat bran as food

    I've started a mealworm farm & bought a bag of wheat bran. I only used a small portion of it. Can I feed the rest to my chickens? Is there any nutritional value to it? Hate to just throw so much of it away. Warm weather coming & I'm afraid bugs will get into it.

    Will a 6' high privacy fence keep in chickens?

    Be sure & only clip 1 wing. Clipping both will allow them to still get altitude. Clipping 1 will get their lift off balance & keep them from flying.

    Dilemma - Get up crack dawn or leave coop door open overnight?

    Why don't you buy/install an automatic door on your coop? Easy & cheap to do, just have to adjust your timer with the sunrise. Have had mine since September with no problems.

    Automatic doors, dusk and lighting?

    I installed an automatic door which is on timers. My birds are lazy about roosting up. They sometimes don't roost until it is almost dark-thirty. My door stays open about 45 minutes after dark. Noone has ever gotten locked out. Mine works great, which sure helps when nobody is around to...

    Neighbor dogs, what do I do?

    If you are unwilling to do what it takes to stop the dogs from killing your chickens, then you should get rid of the chickens & get an inside pet, maybe tropical fish.

    Found Nest

    Gathered them up today. Had 31 in all. No way to tell what order she layed them. I cleaned up the spot & moved the wheelbarrow. Maybe now she will lay in the box with her sisters. Thanks.

    Found Nest

    I have been getting eggs from my RIR's since thanksgiving. I have had 1 hen disappear during the day. Well yesterday, I found a nest with 29 eggs in it. I guess she's been laying almost everyday since the first of Dec. My question is, What should I do with these eggs? I wouldn't think any...
