Introducing 2 chickens to the coop

As some of you may know from my earlier posts...we had to take out our EE and put her by herself in her own coop next to the big coop bec she was getting her feathers plucked. She has been in her own coop since about May. Her feathers are grown back, and 3 weeks ago we gave her a friend...

    Ameraucana? Or Imposter!?

They are Easter Eggers. I was sold an Americauna. She is an Easter Egger. : ( She has slate legs...she lays tan eggs. So...she didn't get enough of the green gene I suppose.

    I Hate Flies!

Quote: We did that and our cochin thought it was a hanging treat and got all tangled up in it. So far I like the Poultry Protector. That seems to be working.

    I Hate Flies!

Quote: Yes - Vanillaroma is the right ones. No - they don't smell of vanilla. I have no idea what the smell is but it's not vanilla, but flies don't like it for sure. Well, I didn't like the smell either. PU - I threw them out. I wonder what the long term effects of breathing in air...

    I Hate Flies!

Quote: Did you buy the yellow trees? Do they say "vanillaroma" on them? I didn't think they smelled anything like vanilla...so I thought I got the wrong ones. I read one post about fly repellent for horses...I might try that.

    I Hate Flies!

The flies we have are the tiny black flies. I throw the poop out. I purchased the vanilla trees, but they smelled nothing like vanilla. How about if I were to dab vanilla extract in the coop?

    I Hate Flies!

Who has flies? I have flies. YUCK. I had a poop board so I could scrap it everyday, but it was more disgusting then the litter boxes. The poop would be splattered all over the poop board. At least in the litter boxes it hits shavings and stays formed. I pick the poop out of the boxes...

How do I stop feather picking

Once I took my EE out of the main coop...there was peace in the house. No one was picking on anyone and everyone is getting along great. It is so much more fun without out the feather picking. The only problem I have is that my EE is in her own little mini coop and I can't put her back in to...

    Straw is not our thing

My chickens played around with the straw in the nest boxes when they were young. They kicked it out and carried it around in their mouths. So, I gave up and just put pine shavings in the nest boxes. Once they started laying I tried the straw again since I had a bunch and was worried it would...

    Adding a chicken

The lady I am going to get the EE chick (5 weeks now) said she would hold on to her until she was bigger and it would be safer for her to go into the mini coop and pen with our EE. I would like to eventually add them both into the big coop and pen and put the mini one away. I am thinking 12...

    Adding a chicken

We had to separate our EE from the rest of the flock because they were pecking on her so bad. We built a mini coop and run for her and placed it next to the big coop and pen. Her feathers are growing back nice, but when I have them all out together the other chickens still peck at her. I...

Broody Bantam Cochin - How long?

UGG...now I have 3 broody hens! The bantam cochin went broody again last week, and also two of the buff orpingtons. We were away and I had someone taking care of the chickens...she didn't realize they were broody until they were already 4 days into it. I have put one BO in the broody breaking...

    Tarp for Shade

Since they have the shade under the coop...I guess we will just leave it with that. I think you are right that the plastic tarp might make them afraid when it makes a wrinkle noise. I ordered the mesh tarp and was hoping it would be here before we left. They said it shipped yesterday. : (...

    Tarp for Shade

We have a heavy plastic tarp w/ grommets. Brown on one side, Pewter on the other side. Can I use this to cover the top of the run to provide more shade? Should I put the pewter side out or in? I don't want to make it hotter. I ordered a mesh shade tarp, but it is not here yet and we will be...

    Chicken pen flooring?

Sand is nice. We have a dirt run. But, they have a 20 x 20 dustbath that we fill with playsand. All around the dust bath they have kicked out sand and it is nice to rake up the poop in that area. I have contemplated putting a layer of sand down periodically throughout the entire run.
