I was just reading a few posts back about the whites. I really haven't seen too many really typy whites in the Large Fowl, but then again I haven't really kept up with all the breeders and shows and have never purchased any myself from a breeder. I have two white girls (one is my avatar at the...

Congrats, that's totally cool!
HappyMtn, I wouldn't mind having a couple more Wheaten girls. I love the one I got from Jean. She's so pretty. Sure wish you were closer.

I can imagine that they eggs would be damaged a tad... I want to find someone who has the birds first and THEN get my eggs. If this is sooner than later, I will be happy. However I am obviously willing to wait an extra month (or however long) to ensure safe shipment and quality birds...
I have 33 brand new fuzzy butts! A friend hatched some of them for me since they wouldn't all fit in my Brinsea 20.
There are 30 Lavender and Black/Lavender split Ameraucanas and 3 Wheaten Marans. I KNOW I won't have room for all these once they start growing up, so after I pick out a few for...
Maybe she is. She does have long legs now that I look at her again, but it would be easiler to tell if she were standing and it was a good profile shot. I'm sure those more familier with both breeds will chime in and let you know. Like I said, mine are just pets and I don't breed or show...

I haven't had any luck hatching shipped eggs this time of year because of the heat they're exposed to during shipping....but then I'm in the South and it's 100 degrees here. Since you're much farther North you might try finding some from someone that's also up North, or buying local...
You do want a bird with a clean white body. I have an Old English Game bantam pullet too (as well as a rooster), but she does some color in her body that she shouldn't have. I don't really know a lot about OEG bantam's. Mine as just pets. They seem to be good natured birds, but the standard...
Jeremy, I'm so sorry to hear about your pullet. I'd definately cover the run as soon as possible. My back run is really large so it's uncovered but it's also completely hidden by trees, and luckily I've only seen one hawk in the 2 1/2 years I've had chickens. Possums, racoons and coyotes are...
Steve, I'm glad another baby came home. It's so hard not knowing if they're alive or dead.
Wow, it took me about 20 minutes to quickly catch up on this thread, lol! I don't come to town much in the summer, jand I don't have internet out at the farm, so I was way behind.
I finally got a few...
Yea, probably do have more than one male in there, lol! If not, what's your secret?
I have a few young cockerels that are harder to tell from the females than others, so possible that some may have the slow feathering gene, but odd that only the males would have it.

Could be that the top is a male and the bottom is female.....looks that way to me. The males usually get their tails a little later than the females, at least mine do, and the bottom one looks to have thinner leg/shanks where the top one has thick ones like a male would have.

Are you certain they'd be Lavender? I mean, I understand that two doses of Lav always dilutes black, but I'm just questioning because there isn't any significant (visual) black on a splash bird. Would the chicks be Lavender Splash? ...or would the base black color still dilute evenly...
pips&peeps :
That "blue" is probably a lavender. Do you have a full size picture of it. It may also have a single comb.....
Jean, I'm pretty sure I see rows of bumps on the side too. Really hard to make out, but pretty sure it's a pea comb.

I'll try to weigh him soon. I'll also get a better picture while I'm at it. He's already grown since that one, and is looking nice. I think he has a good top line but needs to hold his tail higher, which he might do once he toughens up. Right now he's low man, even...

I agree, my motto is nothing leaves my yard alive. I end every choice of where my projects go with a hatchet. And IF a friend would want one, tufted turd balls. I won't risk it to anyone to muck up.
I have a rare combo of mutt cock. Who is 12 lbs or more. In this pic was taken in...
pips&peeps :
You have to remember he is standing next to silver pullets. They are running around 3-3 1/2 lbs, so he's probably not all that big. I suggest you weigh him for a better idea of his actual size.
Ameraucana weight standards:
Cockerels 5 1/2 lbs
Cocks 6 1/2 lbs
Pullets 4 1/2 lbs...
Love all the chick pictures! Welcome to our new members!
Jean, I've tried twice, but have yet to get a good picture of the Black/Silver split male you sent along with the pullets (who are just gorgeous by the way). The close ups keep turning out blurry. I hope you can at least get an idea...
Actually, I didn't recognize Taryn as a Silver either at first, due to a slight green cast to the picture and the lack of beard and muffs at that "awkward age". I can see the breast color now though. She looks so sweet natured in the photo, but I know what you mean by wild. My Silvers were a...
