How do you know when bumblefoot treatment can be stopped?

It sounds like a dumb question, I know, but here's the story: 3-4 weeks ago, I noticed my Pekin, Ziggy, was limping really bad. I soaked her feet in warm water, cleaned them up, and picked at a few dark spots, but didn't see anything that bad. Her ankle was pretty swollen though. She was still...

8 week old duckling with weak leg

I'm not sure what's going on with my big ol' baby. :( They've had brewer's yeast in their food almost every time I've ever fed them. I don't see any injuries? but the weak leg seems atrophied compared to the other. I think it bears weight okay, but the leg swings out to the right as he/she walks...

need advice on treating ducks that were attacked

My (literal) nightmares finally happened last night - I woke up this morning to a bloodbath in the duck pen.:hit Only two escaped unharmed; three were injured, two were killed inside, one I found in the creek, and my baby Billie is just missing. God, I hope she just flew off somewhere but deep...

    Do your ducks obey requests?

The other day they were all in the creek, having all kinds of splashy fun, but it was getting dark and really cold and I was ready to go inside. I yelled, hey ducks, come on, let's go, and gestured back toward their pen. A few looked at me for couple seconds, then went back to swimming. Over the...

    scalped duckling :(

So my mallard, Ruby Sue, managed to sneak and hatch an egg two weeks ago last Sunday. As much as I adore the babies, I don't need any more ducks to care for, so I made sure she didn't have any more eggs and let her keep her baby since it didn't have any other babies to keep it company. She had...

    Brand new duckling can't peep

My friend got some ducklings from TSC. One appeared to be a very new baby, and it can't make a sound. It finally started eating and drinking, thank goodness (one reason why I think it was very new, other than its appearance - I know they don't need to eat for the first few days), but still no...

What breed of duckling is this?

Saw these cuties at TSC this evening and was able to identify all but one. The lighter brown one next to the mallard has marking on his face like the mallard but no back spots and I've never seen one that light. Doesn't look like a muscovy... anyone have any ideas? Just curiosity really... I...

Constantly broody duck doesn't appear to have molted in a long time :(

So my Ruby Sue is only one of two ducks that I've had go broody and the other rarely ever tried and was easily deterred. Ruby on the other hand seems to almost always have that broody attitude. She never quacks like the other ducks anymore, just makes that ack-ack-ack-ack sound with her feathers...

2.5 year old drake having balance issues - vet was unsure of what's wrong...any ideas?

My Bullwinkle has been gradually developing issues balancing himself over the past 6 months or so. At first, he would just stumble every now and then, and I attributed it to him being fat and not graceful, lol, as he has always been very big for his breed - he's a Mallard but can barely get off...

Yet another duckling ID thread :)

I bought two (hopefully female - I tried to sex them) ducks from TSC. They were a very mixed shipment and I tried to choose runners. At nearly two weeks old, I really think one is a fawn and white runner. The other, however, has me a little stumped. It's tough to find good example pics of...

Winter housing for mallards...what do you think of my idea?

I know I'm crazy for thinking about winter when it's over 80° outside, lol, but I want to be prepared. I only barely got their permanent pen built last year before the snow hit (and I mean HIT - almost 2 feet...power was out for days). Since I was rushed, I did an admittedly poor job on their...

Egg bound or something else? Worried!

I came home from work today and my littlest girl is acting very strange. She is normally very energetic, but today she is sitting down...a lot. She looks alert, and is interested in food and water - I put out some peas and after she figured out what the boys were getting she "hobbled" over and...

    Duck in flight!

Ruby Sue decided instead of just gliding off the couch like the other ducks, she wanted to take the long route halfway around my living room, lol. I just love pics of ducks in flight for some reason.

Oh boy, I think I'm in trouble...might have too many drakes

So I already had two boys (Rocky and Bullwinkle). I wanted to get them some girls, so I ordered 3 pullets with a friend's order. All of mine were DOA :( , and grief-stricken me went to TSC later that day and attempted to vent sex their babies. I was only really sure about one of them, but went...

Does Durvet Vitamins & Electrolytes have enough niacin for ducklings?

I might just be paranoid, but it seems like one of my almost 3-week old babies is sitting an awful lot. This one grew leaps and bounds in just a couple days, so maybe it's just adjusting to the extra size and weight of itself, I don't know. I've been mixing Durvet V & E in their water this whole...

Couple of funny duck pics :)

Within a minute or two of their first trip outside one of the babies found some lunch! Ate the whole worm in no time, lol. Ewww... Bullwinkle wasn't sure what to think of those little fluffy things outside his pen. Right after I snapped this pic, the baby jumped toward the wire and Bullwinkle...

almost had new babies today...heartbroken instead :(

I found a friend's sister who was willing to go in on an order with me so that I could get just 3 snowy mallard girls from Ideal Poultry (to keep my two boys company). She ordered 5 Pekins, and said she'd take the "packing peanuts" too, so I thought surely all would be well. When I got to the...

    Mallard or Rouen?

So my two rescue babies are growing up quickly. One has always been noticeably larger than the other, but now that they are nearing full size, I'm beginning to think that the larger one is a Rouen, or at least part Rouen. Her body shape is very different from the mallards I've had (and I'm only...

4 week old wheezy duckling - what's wrong?

So I recently rescued two baby mallards that someone let loose at the lake. They had come from the pet store; about 3 weeks old at the time, no adult feathers, and the temperature dropped below freezing the night I brought them home...poor (but lucky) babies :( Anyway, I've noticed one of them...
