Well we kind of assumed he is not the species, but rather a chicken breed lookin much like it. He has been handled extensively since a few days old, so he isn't wild, for sure. But he really does like getting up higher than any bird we've had before (see photo of him 2 feet from the end of our...
So here he is! Yes, a roo. We think he's proven himself to be a red jungle fowl, based on his colors, including the legs, his tail shape, and his truncated crowing (Cock-a-doo!)
OR, of course he may be a mix.
Whatever the case, he's really sweet so far (hope that doesn't change), & of course...
So what you're all telling me is, my chick is a mutt? ;-)
That seems appropriate, as I'm a bit of a mutt myself: Irish, English, German, Swedish ancestry. lol
I bought them from a local place called Prianti Farms here on Long Island, New York. The manager didn't know too much information about the chicks in specific. He gets them from his uncle, who apparently breeds them; but he didn't even know what kind of chick was what in the mixed batch of all...
Fortunately the seller assured us he'd gladly take any back who turned out to be roosters. We're already attached, but we bore this in mind. Sorry you had to rehome yours. Thanks for the feedback.
We got this little blue legged sweetheart from a mixed batch of many breeds. We dont know exactly how many weeks old she is. We're thinking buff Orpington. What do you think, folks?
Adding this photo to help with the roo (?) predictions. The blue legs really have us confused too. Just can't find a good solid match for this bird online.
... and while I'm at it, is all hope lost that it's not a roo?
The best I can say is that (s)he is a few weeks old. We got this one and 2 others from a batch that included a wide variety of breeds. In the linked video, the one in question is the little one in the foreground. The other, we're...
Update: The jury is still out, months later. Cataracts seems likely, given the way it looks now. It no longer appears as a star-like growth in the eye, and it has progressed. I'm not sure how much she can see but "barely" would seem to be the most accurate description. I have to physically take...
Hm. My wife suggested the same thing. I can't seem to find any online images of chicken cataract that matches what I see on her, but then again there are a number of very different looking manifestations of it. I'd say that's certainly a possibilty. Now to do some research on cataracts.
Thanks...
Anyone know what this is? Below the photo, I'll outline her symptoms, etc.
A few months ago, Penny (three years old and not laying anymore as of this past summer) was making a strange noise I'd never heard before and acting a little odd: Standing around making forward head movements in various...
I have a hen that exhibited some similar symptoms. One day she was fine but acting strangely, making a strange noise I've never heard before. The next day, she was unable to walk. I couldn't get her to drink and she couldn't navigate her way to eat. Furthermore, her crop seemed to have stalled...
First of all, thanks for the many great ideas. Here are some that our girls seem to appreciate:
I skewer a cabbage with a shishkabob skewer from a barbecue set, then suspend it in the chicken run. They have a great time pecking over the next few days.
I also bought an automatic fish feeder...
Thanks for the info. We have brought her inside, and she seems to have adjusted reasonably well by now, but no one is home during the day. I'm a teacher, so I've actually been bringing her to work with me. I made a 3x6 enclosure in the back of my (large) classroom by wrapping chicken wire...
I'm looking for advice. We have only one chicken left from what was for the past year and a half a tiny flock of 3. (Cancer took Lindy very quickly; Nelly died of impacted crop when she began eating pine litter after Lindy died. Perhaps she might have made it but the vet couldn't see her for a...
