Ages ago I had a small flock and had to get rid of them due to moving to an apartment in the city.
Now I'm back with a new, significantly smaller flock. I have 3 EEs that are now 38 weeks old and no signs of laying! Lazy suckers!
--I feed them a commercial 16% feed (as soon as I'm out I'm...
I searched and either my google-fu is terrible or no one else has asked. How would a Cayuga Pekin cross be for eating?
I currently raise Standard Pekins (so delicious) and picked up two Cayuga Ducklings so it'll be a while before they're old enough to produce offspring.
I have several Pekin eggs in the incubator and one of the duck eggs has pipped a full 5 days early!
Is this normal? Do you think the duckling will survive? The duckling is moving around in the egg a lot!
Anyone else want to join me? I have a staggered hatch right now but I also had 14 eggs come in the mail so I've added them to the 'bator and they're on their way.
Not sure if these will even develop as it took longer to get shipped and arrive than expected. But I have high hopes.
It wasn't easy.
Not emotionally. I held the duck in my hands and told him he was a good, delicious little duck. I petted him, calmed him and tried to snap his neck.
An 8 month old Pekin is HEAVY and the neck snap method we wanted to use didn't work. I just don't have the hand strength...
So I took y'alls advice and I'm going to try my hand at ducklings again. We're going to pick up three 3 week old Pekin ducklings on Saturday along with a female pekin for breeding purposes. (I forgot to ask how old she was, I'm assuming 4 months old since she's supposedly out of a November...
Maybe one of you fine people can help me. I picked these sweethearts up at the TSC in Bosque, NM (near Albuquerque) from the "assorted red" bin. I was pretty sure these little pullets were Rhode Island Reds but now that they're feathering out I'm not so sure. They're awefully brown to be RIRs...
This was not my idea, let me just get this out of the way.
My boyfriend wants to use a small heater he'd picked up at Walmart to keep the brooder box warm (it has a temp setting for 70, 75, 80, and 85 degrees) and replace the 100 watt lightbulb I had been using with a CFL for light only. Is...

I think I understand now. While out and about in Albuquerque today my boyfriend and I stopped in at the Tractor Supply store in Bosque. I'd gone there expecting to check out the supplies there, to look into prices on Layena with Omega 3 and check out the Incubators. I came home with 6 new "red...
Frankie is the obvious boy and in the foreground. Lola is the one standing behind him, (she's getting an itch) is it my imagination or is she throwing drake feathers? These are supposed to be a 7 month old breeding pair. They both have curled tail feathers but Frankie's is tightly curled.
Tell...
The state, not the country. You have no idea how many people don't realize there's a state called NEW Mexico.
I've been a rather bad newbie. I posted a bunch of other places before posting here. Oops...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

This can't be good. I have a pair of Pekin ducklings that are a week and a half old. I did have 4, but two of the died this past Friday (8 days old). One had died between checking on them before putting a DVD in and finishing the movie (The movie wasn't THAT bad! It was GalaxyQuest). The second...
