How to set up a dust bath

A kitty litter box works nice. Shallow easy to clean, holds a lot of DE. Put it out for a few days and see how they use it. The dust can irritate the lungs so in a fresh air area is good. Leave it out until they empty it no cover unless it rains. Start experimenting with sand, clay, peat...

HELP! First time chicken owner with bad pecking problems and now in tears

You sound like you are doing things right. Lots of things will challenge you and this site is a great resource for advice and planning. The additional outside space will be nice. Hanging a cabbage on a string in the run is a good distraction. Finding the bully as has been mentioned for a...

HELP! First time chicken owner with bad pecking problems and now in tears

Did you raise them from chicks or buy pullets? How big is the roost/coop and how big is the run? Do you have a pet cage you can put in the coop for a few days? Do they have full time feeder trays available or do you feed twice a day and let them run? Has it been hot there when the damage occurs?

    advice please on borrowed incubator.

Bleach water and spray out the old one. Plug it in and start watching your thermometer and humidity. Before you put the eggs in. A new one is not always best. Will this be your only hatch? Does your friends have an egg turner? It is about a $40 add on to get a turner, which keeps you from...

Rent a center tool store and look at electric jack hammers. Thats if you have electric power in the barn. If not sledge hammer is gonna take a lot longer. Plan on breaking it all out in half a day and return the jack hammer. Next remove all the materials and if no reuse is planned for the...

Spotted an opossum, how much of a threat?

No need to replace your fencing. Add on. Chicken wire is nice for keeping chickens in. Welded wire can go right over the top of your chicken wire. The 2 inch by 4 inch will actually look better and the chicken wire will be less noticeable if you preflatten the rolled wire. Staples hammer and...

Is it okay to leave them out at night?

Give them a few options. Perches for the pecking order status climbers and a pile of bedding in one corner for the ones who want to cuddle up if it gets cold. I think the perches will be full first. Look in on them the first night a few hours after sunset but they should be fine. If you have...

Spotted an opossum, how much of a threat?

Possums kill chickens. They have up to 11 babies. Eventually they will get in your garage. Yes they can get thru chicken wire one nasty bite at a time. They will never make good pets. I have trapped and shot many this year. Good luck. At least you spotted it before a loss.

How do I raise healthy birds?

Well at least you have some time to formulate your plan for the hens when the Roosters get older and start to strut. Good luck with that one. Disease in a clean low crowd pen is not your biggest concern of things to worry about. Even back in the 70s predators were the number one killer of...

Do i need a new incubator?

I just did a quick search and typed in OCTAGON 10 and there is 68 pages of threads on this unit here on this site. Probably more as apparently they make octagon 20, 40 also. I am not familiar with this unit but put a few small jars of water in there while you are working out the bugs. Read as...

Do i need a new incubator?

Fill it with the number of eggs or use water bottles to match the volume. Waite 3 or 4 hours between each adjustment and reading and if you cant regulate it in 2 or 3 days then reevaluate your equipment. Placement in the room near air movement, sunlight , open doors or windows, so many things...
