7 month old Black Langshans STILL aren't laying

I have 8 Black Langshans that I've raised from 1 week old. They were born mid-May. They STILL aren't laying. Even their combs are still pinkish. They have light on a timer and get outside often. I switched them over to layer feed about a month ago at the advice of my neighbour. Any ideas???

    Black Langshan???

She really does have a Silkie head, doesn't she? She isn't 'furry' though. Silkie - Langshan? It's going to be very interesting to see what everybody looks like when they grow up. :-)

    Black Langshan???

Hmmm..... I wonder if she is the actual mother of any of the chicks.

    Black Langshan???

Hi, I bought 11 chicks and their mother.... well.... I'm not sure if she is the actual mother of all of them because she hatched out 11 eggs and had another 9 newly hatched chicks stuck under her. I got 11 of the 20 chicks. Anyway, I was told that they were Black Langshans but I'm not so...

    Nasty hen raising chicks

Is it normal for a mama hen to leave her almost 3 week old chicks alone for the night? My mama hen manages to escape from their living quarters to perch in a different area of the coop - leaving her chicks frantically peeping for her. I wondering if she just wanted to branch to perch on so I...

    Nasty hen raising chicks

Oh yes! As a mother, I've wanted to bite some people too! I REALLY didn't want to separate them because she was a good mother. That just didn't sit well with me. It was my understanding that she was naturally a mean chicken so I was afraid of that being passed onto the chicks. But...

    Black Langshans

Hi, I am raising some straight-run Black Langshans. They are two weeks old. I'm not sure how many are roosters, but we're planning to eat those ones. Anyway, I need to have them processed before they start crowing (because of neighbour). When is the best time to have them processed? Also...

    Nasty hen raising chicks

Thanks for the responses. I have since emailed the previous owner and she said that this hen wasn't any meaner than any other hen - when she isn't a mama. So, that's fine. I'll let her be the mama. I've started wearing a leather glove whenever I reach into the coop. The last few days I've...

    Nasty hen raising chicks

Thanks for the response. I've had them for all of 24 hours. I just took out a little bit of yogurt and the mama attacked my hand - only tiny chunk missing from my finger, but I'm not looking forward to future interactions. I don't know how on earth I'm going to be able to get them out of their...

    Nasty hen raising chicks

I just bought 10 Black Langshan chicks (1 week old) and I got the mama hen free. Apparently, the hen isn't very nice. At first, I thought that it would be good for the mama to teach the chicks, but I'm a little concerned that she'll teach them to be mean too. I hadn't planned on getting the...

Alternatives to "Selling eggs at the gate"

Hi, thanks for your reply. Here is the article that got me paranoid: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/food-and-wine/the-egg-police-crack-down-on-local-grey-market-eggs/article1478849/page2/ What do you think?

Alternatives to "Selling eggs at the gate"

Hi, I hope this is in the correct part of the forum. I've been selling eggs to my friends 45 minutes away from me. I live in an area where my customers are expected to come to my gate to buy eggs from me. I don't think it's realistic for them to drive all this way for eggs (since I'm going...

    New in NS

Hi, I've been reading advice here since I got chickens 6 months ago. It's about time that I signed up. This forum has been very helpful. I have more questions. I was also hoping to 'hook up' with the other chicken-people that I know live near me. Thanks!
