I just read about "vent gleet" which I had never heard of before and it looks like that might be what it is?

Is this "egg-break disease" or maybe something else? (with pic)

I noticed over the last week that she had been a little lethargic, spending more time in the coop than out in the run. I thought she was just hot (it's been getting up into the 90's here) and kept making sure they had plenty of water. Yesterday my husband had let them out to run around and told...

    Poor Silkie: I'm Just Frustrated

I just need to vent here. I hope that's okay. I have a 6 month old silkie bantam that nicked his wing on a piece of chicken wire sticking out of the run a little more than a month ago. When we found him (about 20 minutes later) the other chickens had him cornered, pecking at him and he'd pretty...

    Silkie Rooster help!!

We will probably give it a try. If the silkie hadn't gotten injured and had to be away from the rest of the flock I wouldn't be so concerned about it. But I know it's enough of a chore just reintroducing an injured chicken back in and now it might be reintroducing a rooster to another rooster!

    Silkie Rooster help!!

*Sigh* this is what I figured. Sad, because I really don't want to get rid of my silkie. Thank you all so much for your help!

    Silkie Rooster help!!

I have a quick question I was wondering if somebody could help me out with. I have 5 chickens, all hatched in March. One is a silkie bantam and it was injured a few weeks ago so it's been recuperating on the enclosed porch. It's time to start getting it back outside, so I have it in the dog...

Free Range or Not? What Does Everyone Prefer?

I think everyone should do what is best for their situation. Pens aren't for some people and free-ranging isn't for others. As with caring from anything from goldfish to children, there's no "right" and "wrong" way. As long as you have happy, healthy chickens, do what's best for you and don't...

Pullet laid an egg with no shell while being mated with. Normal?

She hasn't laid another egg since that day . Still not sure what's going on. She seems fine, she's eating drinking. Hopefully she starts back up.

Pullet laid an egg with no shell while being mated with. Normal?

They are getting plenty of calcium. I give them oyster shells and all the eggs they've laid have been beautiful, big and nice hard shells.

Pullet laid an egg with no shell while being mated with. Normal?

Yesterday morning DH let the chickens out of the coop and my rooster, Guillermo got busy with his usual routine of having his way with one of the girls. DH said during this process, Juanita (the pullet) dropped what looked to be an unfinished egg on the ground, and then all the chickens gathered...

And then there were two (roosters)

Thank you, that's what I was wondering. What should I do if my bantam silkie turns out to be a rooster also? Since it's so small, will it challenge the rooster? I really don't want to get rid of the silkie, but I don't think it would make a very good flockmaster lol!

And then there were two (roosters)

I have a flock of 6 chickens, all about 2 1/2 months old. I picked out a straight run Barred Rock, knowing there was a chance it would be a roo. Also a straight run bantam which turned out to be a Silkie. The rest were supposed to be pullets. One of my black "pullets" turned out to be a roo, and...

Moving the girls to the coop in the morning. I have a few questions!

We are finishing putting the poultry fencing up tonight, and I am planning on moving the girls in the morning (that way I can keep an eye on them all day). I want this to go well, and I realized, contrary to the ridiculous amount of faith and confidence I normally have in myself, I do have a few...

Tractor Supply Employee Knowledge About Chicks

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I just got into raising chickens, I felt like I knew next to nothing and would look stupid asking questions. I got there and the guy who helped me knew exactly NOTHING about the chicks. That would have been fine, I didn't expect him to be a chicken expert, but he...

    Heatlamp and Temperture questions...

I just got my chicks on Thursday and we are keeping them in a brooder my husband built into the enclosed porch area (we have a cat and dog in the house who would like very much to get to them, so we keep them out there). Today it is about 88 degrees outside, and the thermometer under the...

    Future Crazy Chicken Lady here!

Bought my eight babies yesterday! We did lose a red pullet overnight, that was sad to wake up to. She was being pretty strange and lethargic all night. They were all straight off the truck, I suppose these things happen. Also excited about my bantam! I knew I wanted one banty so I picked out a...
