    Duck Pen/House help

Thanks GQ - like I said I'm most likely overthinking it all. I'll put something together and see if they use it

    Duck Pen/House help

Hi all, New to ducks - ducklings on the way! I'm in process of building the run. It is 8x16 and completely enclosed in hardware cloth. Half the roof will be clear panels, half will just be hardware cloth. I'm trying to figure out what to do with the house. First, for 3 ducks, (welsh...

Comment by 'JML72' in article 'Cozy Coop in Cape'

One suggestion. Have an emergency release for the gate closure you have on the door into the run. That door comes closed behind you a little too hard and you're locked in there until someone lets you out!

    Bees?

Hi all - so it's springtime and beehive clean up time. I was wondering: Especially this time of year, there are a lot of dead bees out of the hive. Is there any reason to not give them to the chickens mixed in as a treat? I'm talking normal bee die off, not pesticide induced. Thoughts please?

    HW cloth sources

Hi - depends on where you are. I got mine from https://www.wireclothman.com/shop.php?cPath=41 But I was was driving through Jersey for work and was able to pick up and avoid any shipping at all. That was the cheapest option for me. Good luck!

    shell-less eggs?

Thanks FW - I'll try that out. It's not all the time that it happens, but twice now in 7 days (just started). I figures it wouldn't hurt. Just came here to ask about ideas before I jumped in on my own If anyone else has insights as well I'll be happy to listen!

    shell-less eggs?

Hi all - I'm running into an issue with my layers - every few days the eggs I find in a box are covered in dried yolk and shavings/nesting material. At first I thought I had an egg eater. But there is no sign of shell pieces in the box. I also think that if I had one or more eating eggs, they...

New Girl Here... How to Get Around Minimum Orders

Try mypetchicken.com or Meyer Hatchery (MPC actually uses Meyer as a drop shipper...). They have a minimum of 3-5 depending on your zip code. I ordered from mypetchicken last spring as a novice soon-to-be-chicken-owner. The chicks arrived from Ohio to MA the next day, alive and thriving...

    Removing golf balls?

I assume I know the answer... but... I have 6 hens that have all been laying for the past 1.5-2 months (one started about Thanksgiving, and the others have been joining ranks since then). I had put golf balls in the nest boxes to start them out. Is it safe to remove the golf balls by now...

    Help me figure out who...

Hi all - I've got chickens hatched June 4th. Three are laying now! But I don't know who they are. I have a Columbian Wyandotte, a LF Easter Egger, a WCB Polish, and 3 bantams: buff brahma, ee, and white silkie. The wyandotte has been laying about 2.5 weeks. About a week ago I started...

That's what I was thinking. Thanks!

    Oatmeal on cold mornings?

Ok - this may be a ridiculous question, but I have read a lot about how the girls would love oatmeal on these brisk New England mornings. I have a ton of instant oatmeal - the maple and brown sugar flavored (don't judge. I love it lol) Is this ok to give to them, or do I need to focus on...

Buying chicks at the feed store?

You'll pay more, but I can't recommend My Pet Chicken more strongly. Healthy, active, and all pullets (at least, 17 weeks in they all seem t be. I'm starting to get confident in that statement LOL). I know some have had bad experiences, but mine was great.

Do You Have An Opinion On Killing Predators?

I think the biggest problem is that the original post started with the following: and then proceeded to criticize anyone who didn't do what the OP thinks should be done - so actually, it's the definition of being antagonistic. That being said, it's fun to watch people hiding behind a computer...

    The Karate Chicken....

Actually, not as much as I'd probably like to... and that was a just-happened-to-look-over-at-the-right-time. But boy those things are so stupid... they crack me up LOL And before y'all start yelling - yes, come on. Chickens are stupid LOLOL

    The Karate Chicken....

I think I need to name my EE pullet Mr. Miyagi. I watched her eying a fly that buzzed into the coop. Then she lept into the air and caught it on the wing! By the time her feet hit the ground she seemed as surprised as anyone else that she succeeded. Of course, then she cackled and took off...

    Polish picked on

Thanks Terry - I don't have outside roosts - I've beenmeaining to put one or two up but haven't yet. They have the ramp going up into their house (it's very similar to the Palace design listed on here) and they go in and out every once in a while. I bluekoted and threw a bunch of scratch and...

    Polish picked on

Nope no roosters (that I know of) - they're all about 10 weeks old. It seems like once the novelty of the "hey your hair is PURPLE now!" has worn off they're pretty much ignoring her again. She wasn't even trying to get away from them when they were picking - I just didn't want to see it...
