Lowest Hen in the Pecking Order is Attacking Pullets

I've got my pullets in a modified smaller pen inside the ladies free range. Two pullets flew out today and were running for their lives. Ironically, the oldest biddy who is lowest in the pecking order decided they had to go. I can't have her hurting the babies. Any suggestions?

    Help! Baby Turkeys not assimilating!

I was given two baby turkeys (Royal Palms) this week, approximately 10-12 days old. Apparently they had been running wild with other turkeys on the farm. Have kept them in a cage two nights: 1 night under heat lights- the next night in a nest box secured within a cage. They haven't drunken any...

    Featherless Backs What's Wrong?

I have ten hens and most don't have feathers on their backs. I had a rooster that rode many of them and created this problem. However, since I found the roo a new home, I seem to have additional birds with feathers going missing. I found a hen doing what the rooster did but even her back is...

Drinking from an eyedropper - HOW?

I 'drop' the medicine on the top/side of the beak and let the medicine roll slowly into the mouth so they can swallow it. It takes time but I don't have to worry about aspiration into the lungs. Do you manually open her mouth first?

Want only one roo, but want to make it count

I received a Buff Orpington roo from McMurray in error. I enjoyed him tremendously, that is, until the little guy turned hormonal. He would attack everyone but me and on occasion he would even charge the hand that fed him. Anyway, I would have kept him because he did alert the hens to danger but...

Ailing hen makes a comeback from alfalfa impaction

I want to share with everyone the positive results of my first medical crisis with my hen, Miss Friendly. For three days she sequestered herself from the rest of the flock; roosting quietly, looking sad, and head tucked into her shoulders. At first I thought she was succumbing to the...

How will wiping out my rooster change the dynamics of the flock?

Thanks for your posts. I'll keep everything you've said in mind as I think on this. I'll let you know what I decide and how it goes. Have a happy, healthy & prosperous New Year all!

How will wiping out my rooster change the dynamics of the flock?

I'm so torn. My roo, an overly hormonal and agressive 7 month BO, instills fear in everyone. I have to make the decision to keep or get rid of him before someone gets seriously hurt. In my heart I know what I need to do but I count on the boy to watch for predators when the girls are...

    Auto Bailout.......

Quote: Brenda, I pray for you and your family and all Americans because our economy is going to seriously affect every American citizen. A politician whose name I won't reveal told me he has grave concerns about America's future sovereignty. That we may lose all industry and might well become...

    Auto Bailout.......

Who knows whats the right thing to do in this difficult situation? I sure don't. My concerns go out to the retirees who have planned on health care and pensions. It's hard to get a job when you're over 50. Those currently employed, well the union negotiated for them some pretty nice wages and...

    Anyone own a miniature horse?

I second your suggestion about getting a small horse instead. Horses generally seem to have a gentler and quieter temperment and are more respectful to children. Especially older horses! Take your time selecting the animal and watch the critter's behavior in different circumstances. Then get...

Another Round of Guy or Girl!!!! Opinions Please

It sure looks like a rooster to me. I have a BO that was hatched 6/1/08. He has been crowing since 8 weeks and acting like a roo prematurely. Notices everything, protects girls from predators with verbal warnings, puffs up alot and tries to mount the girls. He looks very similar to yours. My BO...

    Are egrets predators?

May be a silly question but I've noticed an egret hanging around in the mornings. We don't have a lake nearby so is it watching my free range chickens?

Chickens Allowed to Roam in Yard??

Quote: I have Australorps, Brahmas, Buff Orpingtons & Americanas. The Brahmas and Orpingtons are the friendliest and love being stroked and held. The Australorps are very shy and would prefer I don't handle them. They stick together and I still have trouble telling them apart at 12 weeks...

Electrical wiring safety in hen house?

My DH wants to install electrical in the hen house to make my life easier this winter. I need a water heater and lightbulb. Should I put an outlet on the wall near the floor for the water heater? Light bulb suspended from ceiling with conduit? I'm a safety nut. I don't know what my birds will do...
