Hi all i have 4 chickens and live a little out side Chicago, starting to get chilly here with highs of 50s..and the other mourning when i went out to my chickens I see a lot of my black astrolorp feathers stunned about the chicken run... i only have 1 black chicken the rest are tan in brown...

O ' it's real, any one following the bakers green acres battle going on up in Michigan. small farmers are fighting with DNR up there that passed a ordnance , saying that anyone raising pigs that have Hair or curly or straight tails are raising wild pigs and they must be terminated , cause wild...
I'm new to chickens , and this will be mines first winter here out side Chicago.. the oldest one was laying for almost two months till the temp here has dropped to 50ish during the day and 30s at night, well she stopped laying egg's since this cold set in...and am wondering when she will return...
im in the same boat here i have 2 living in my basement, , mine are about 10 weeks old and the same weather as you have...I also wonder how to introduce these 2 new birds to the 2 all ready living out in the coop and run ??

I understand.. but what i did was , when i got the old dirt and clay packed down to level where i was to put the run, I took a long 4' wide roll of chicken wire, and cut it wider and longer than the run, and doubbled it up and over lapped it, It extends out around 2' on all sides of the run...
thanks, i went with about 3-4" of sand in the run, i was putting straw and Hay in the run over the sand, but found if you dont turn over the hay-straw after a rain, it gets funkey and takes days for it to dry out...my coop and run are 75% in the shade.. soo far it's working out great, and yes i...

Nice thread, I was born and raised on the South side of Chicago, I now live in the S/W Burbs out side Chicago where chickens arrent allowed so i have ondly 2 astrolorps in a 10' by 5' run, I have to little girls who love playing with and feeding the Hens, and the neighbors who know of my chickes...
thanks... I just moved the chickens out there today..So glad to get them out of the house..I hope the doubled up chicken wire i buried a few inches under the Run works at keeping raccoons and the fox out..
