I love my four Buff Orpingtons, they are very mellow, not a flighty bird at all. They hang out with the cats and dog without being frightened (I think the cats get upset when the chickens steal their food). They are also a good layer of beautiful brown eggs. You won't be disappointed if you...
I have 11 hens that are about 1 1/2 years of age (and one 3 month old chick being cared for by her mamma), they are currently in a rather small coop which is fine for now as they only go in to lay and sleep. With winter on it's way (I live in southern Minnesota) we would like to move them to our...
Oh, Alaska I love your profile pic.....I am in southern Minnesota and are preparing for a Mayday winter storm...yesterday it was near 80. All my peeps don't really know what to do with this stupid weather. Thanks for the tip on the tractors. Wishing warm weather for us both.
I am in need of some ideas for a movable run for our geese and ducks. They are a few weeks old and have eaten the grass to nothing in the run we have for them. I have been searching for ideas on a movable run so they have access to new lawn every day (maybe my husband won't have to mow the lawn...
Thanks for the post. My 8 goslings (now about 3-4 weeks) have been picking at their own wings leaving bald irritated spots. Yesterday we made an outdoor pen with a door into the coop so they can come and go as they please. Thanks for the tip on the greens I will have to dig up some sod to...
I just went to the back to basic living web page and the tutorial for the saddle is great!!! I have 4 hens with naked backs that desperately need these beautiful cover-ups! Will hopefully get them made soon to post some pics.
Baby chick has been with the others for 2 days now and is getting along well. It is a little smaller than the others but has some spunk. Baby will do ok.
As promised here is a pic of George with his slicked back look...maybe he's a rooster from the 50's. The Minnesota winter shorted his wattles a bit too. Thanks for the great post, glad Roger is doing well too.
Ok all you chicken experts out there my broody hen's egg hatched today, what do I do now. The nesting boxes are 4 feet off the ground, how is the little chick going to eat and drink? Do I put mamma and baby on the coop floor or do I leave her be? We have 6 other mature hens and a rooster, are...
Not sure about her stance, but she sure is cute!!! I will be interested to see what others have to say as I have 50 chicks, 15 ducklings and 8 goslings arriving on April 8th. Didn't have any leg issues with last years bunch, but would love to know what to look for. Thanks for the post.
Roger is looking great! George has lost a few of the tips of his comb and the black on his waddles is starting to come off. I will have to post a pic once his "Old Man Winter chop job" is done too. I am liking the sleek and slicked back look.
My girls doing great. One has been back with the others for a couple weeks now, still featherless in some areas but her skin is healed beautifully. Henny Penny's (I now have a name for her yeah!) wound is healed just waiting for the last of her skin to toughen up a bit and I think she will be...
Bogtown Chick Here is a picture of my roo with the frostbite (his lady friend wanted in on the photo too). Doesn't look quite as bad as yours, but sad none the less. I think it could have been avoided, but our other roo was being a jerk and not letting George back in the coop on those really...
Just an update. It has only been a few days, but the girls are healing nicely. They do look lonely in separate kennels though. Do you think it would be ok to put them together or will the peck at each others wounds?
My buff orpington roo had the same thing happen, the tips of his comb will probably fall off, but he is still a handsome man. Darn Minnesota weather. (I am in southern MN myself)
Found another hen with a wound tonight. Not as bad as the one yesterday, but sad none the less. I have quarentined her as well and am off to get another large dog carrier for her too. If I find another wounded hen tomorrow I know which rooster is causing the problem and he will have to go.
I have 2 roosters and 7 hens, we are looking at getting rid of one of the roos as my production red is now beating up on my buff orpington roo. We have been rotating the roosters and hens in 2 diffferent pens for now usually 3-4 hens to one rooster. They were fine when they were able to get...
Went out to the coop for nightly chores and found one of my hens with blood on her side. Upon further inspection I found a very large (about the size of my palm) open area under her right wing. My guess in one of the boys was having too much fun with her and ripped her side open. I can see her...
Thurdsay 1/24/13 it was only about 10 degrees F for the high and we got 7 eggs for the first time from our 7 hens. 2 production reds and 5 buff orpingtons all about 9 months old. Sad that 3 of the eggs froze, but the cats were happy!
My 2 roosters George (buff orpington) and Jose (production red) are 9 months old and have grown up together. We have 7 hens too. They have always gotten along and George has been top dog as he "matured" first. Over the last couple of days Jose has been attacking George running him into the...
