Greetings!
I have been given 3 chickens.
Our kids have named them:
Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Mrs. Gorf, and Miss Sparkle
We have eggs already. The chickens are reported as being 3 years old.
Any idea of what breeds we have? I'm clueless. I've done turkeys many times but chickens are a new thing...
My hubby said one of our poults was kipping on his back the other day. No idea why. The others were starting to peep at it and prance around it a bit, as if to say: "Dude, what u doing?"
She never had any problems with them getting along. They hand-fed all the birds and thunked 'em if they bit... guess that taught them to respect humans...
My friend was raising ducks a few years ago and ended up with a free turkey. She gave the turkey the same food the ducks were getting and no problems. She is now raising 4 turkeys and no ducks. Her first turkey got over 35 pounds dressed out. from the photos, I would say it was also a Spanish Black.
So we're coming up on one week with our poults. They have already gotten feathers. I emailed the hatchery and they said that the poults were 2 weeks on Thursday.
Some issues I have questions about:
Feathers/Flying:
Um...they are flying already?! Not out of the box (I am using an old...
What is the most entertaining thing your turkeys have done?
What is the dumbest thing your turkeys have done?
What is the smartest thing your turkeys have done?
Can't wait to read your input!
Thanks!
We've got a pair of bourbon reds along with three other pairs (three other breeds) one of our bourbon reds is really a bully. he/she keeps taking food from other poult's mouths. Not cool. Sure hope it gets out of his system quickly.
We just picked up our first ever turkey poults.
We ordered:
2 BBW
2 Narrangansett
2 Wishard Bronze
2 Red Bourbon
How can we tell which are which? How long till we can tell what the sexes are? We are new to this whole "raising birds" thing. They will be meat birds (if that matters).
I went to D and B supply and they told me that I don't need to feed turkeys any kind of starter feed. Just give them the Game Bird Feed and they will be fine.
Anyone else heard of this? We're gonna be raising 8 poults and I don't wanna spend $ on the dinky 5 lbs starter chick feed if I don't...
So I've never raised chickens either.
I bought game bird feed but have had trouble finding starter mash. Is there something I can make from a recipe for them?
Also, I bought chicken nipples (the kind you screw onto the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket) how would I teach the poults to drink out of...
We ordered 4 varieties of turkeys, due on May 10. They include: Bourbon Red, Narragansett, Bronze, and BBW. I am so excited and hope that we can get 5 raise-able/edible hens out of the lot. Never raised anything like this before so it will be an adventure! Any advice would be appreciated!
