Funny, I had a conversation similiar to this with my BF. He refuses to eat my eggs because they came out of a chicken's butt, yet he buys eggs from the store and eats those. I tried to explain to him that they come from the same place, and his response was something along the same lines "well...
I am passively searching for another d'uccle. I just love the one that I have, though she hasn't exactly warmed up to me unless I am throwing bread, and even then she keeps her distance. Anyway, I would like to get another one, but I don't have the time/money to incubate my own eggs, so I am...
My run is covered, the only thing I can figure is that because she is smaller maybe she managed to slip under the fence. They have been making themselves a dust bath right at the fence line and there is a 2 inch or so gap now between the fence and the ground. I am surprised that she didn't get...
I came home from work today to find my d'uccle running around the driveway and my buff orp squawking her head off still in the run. Not sure how the d'uccle got out, best guess is that she dug under the fence. Let the buff out and after 30 minutes of chasing the d'uccle around the two chickens...
I would like to introduce my chickens to being free range. The one hen was free range before she became my chicken, and doesn't have the best track record with returning to the coop at night. However, she has always stuck right around my house, and roosted in the same tree so was easy to find...
My chickens made themselves their own dust bath too. It keeps getting bigger and bigger too. I am going to take the bucket and fill it with dirt from the feild for them to use. :)
I will have to get that a try. I never considered dust bathing for chickens. I guess the little patches of dirt covered in feathers in the run make sense now!
They have an 6 x 6 enclosure. I am hoping that eventually I will be able to free range them. My Buff Orp doesn't have a very good track record on returning to the coop at night though. Their enclosure consists of part grass and part weeds/ivy. They are tearing up the grass pretty fast though.
Finally got a picture of my d'uccle hen. She always runs into the coop when I come out to see them. I came armed with bread this time and she thought about it long enough for me to grab a picture before she went and hid in the coop.
Is this normal? No matter where I put it, in the run, in the coop, on the ground, on a concrete block, the chickens keep pooping in their water dish. Is there anything I can do to keep them from pooping in their water? Right now I am changing their water several times a day because of this issue.
I have a layer pellet for my chickens, and I am wondering how much I should be feeding a day, and how much of their food should come from foraging. Right now 2 chickens they are getting 2 cups a day that I spread around their run to give them some entertainment in finding it.
My d'uccle hen is very shy, I am hoping that she will start to warm up soon. Right now whenever I come near the chicken enclosure she runs into the coop, or if I actually go into the enclosure she will run and hide behind my buff orp.
I have a straw and shavings mix in mine. My chickens poop mostly in the nesting boxes, and they sure are a pain to clean! I have noticed that any poop in the run seems to be broken down pretty fast, which is awesome.
