Sending my baby to a new home.

I had a small flock of three chickens for almost three years. At the end of June, I lost one of my girls to a still unknown respiratory problems. The other hens were a bit thrown by this loss, but adapted (probably better than I did). Suddenly last Thursday I lost one of my other girls to egg...

    Chicken throwing up, bearing down

Just when I think she is going to zig, she zags. My hen who was so poor-looking last night has her tail up and looks fine this morning. This morning was her last dose of antibiotics, so if an infection of any sort is the problem the symptoms should become more pronounced soon. In case it is an...

    Chicken throwing up, bearing down

I'm beginning to suspect that the real problem is that she has a soft-shelled egg that she's having trouble getting out, just like she did nine days ago. I've given my girls a ramekin full of oyster shell and grit and I've been tapping some powdered calcium on their treats every day. What else...

    Chicken throwing up, bearing down

Almost a week ago, I took my 3 y/o hen to the vet after pulling an empty, deflated egg from her vet. The vet said she was acting healthy and there was no egg shell left inside her, but gave me some calcium powder and antibiotic in case of egg yolk peritonitis. Everything has been fine, but...

    My Hen Hates Me

She seems to be able to tell when I've got my back to her. Usually she begins her attacks when I'm standing still and she comes around behind me, so it's not like I'm surprising her by coming up on a blind side. Also, she's only 3 y/o. Would a chicken go blind that young? From what?

    My Hen Hates Me

One day a couple of weeks ago, out of nowhere, one of my hens bit my hand while I was feeding them sunflowers seeds out of it. Since then she has gotten worse, often attacking my ankles, the backs of my knees, my hand when she can reach it, and even my heel as I'm walking out of the chicken run...

    Deflated egg pulled from chicken

Well, this morning she's able to poop again. Quite a large one (and a bit watery, but it's been over 100 for a few days now here and they're drinking a lot) with no blood or yolk in it. She's eating and drinking more and not walking in a squatting position. Should I still take her to the vet...

    Deflated egg pulled from chicken

About two and a half years. She's been one of my most consistant and trouble-free layers from the beginning.

    Deflated egg pulled from chicken

One of my chickens has been hunkering down like she's trying to poop or lay an egg ever since this afternoon. She's also been less enthusiastic about food. This evening when I was puting the chickens in the coop, I saw a clear fluid dripping out of her and what looked like some poop sticking out...

    Do chickens mourn?

This might be a weird question. I have had three chickens for almost three years until two days ago when one of my girls died suddenly (necropsy results pending). I've been keeping an extra close eye on the remaining two looking for symptoms and one has been acting a little odd, but not similar...

    Broken eggs

Over half of the eggs that my 2-year-old Cochin has laid in the past couple of months have an incredibly thin shell on one tip that usually ends up broken or cracked before I can even get it out of the nesting box. I haven't had this problem with my other chickens and I have been giving them...

    Wheezing chicken, differential diagnosis

Just got a call from the vet that she is having more trouble breathing and isn't eating or drinking. She got a shot of something to open her airway, but now she's being kept overnight and I'm increasingly worried that she won't make it. Does anyone have any idea why a seemingly healthy chicken...

    Wheezing chicken, differential diagnosis

I have a chicken that has been losing weight for almost a month now; she is eating, but not as much as my other two and lost weight gradually. Yesterday she began wheezing although otherwise acting completely normal. I took her to a vet this morning and she said it was probably worms in her...

    Hen getting picked on

Thanks for your comments. I let all three out into the yard today while I supervised and began noticing that even though two of the hens (a Wyandotte and an EE) were picking on the third (a cochin), when it was just the EE and the Cochin nobody got pecked. It seems that my Wyandotte (already the...

    Hen getting pecked bald

Thanks for your comments. Hen getting pecked bald

I have had three hens for two and a half years now. They get along fine and have plenty of room; in short, I have never had a problem from them. About two months ago, however, a feral/stray rooster started coming around my yard and preening for the hens. It didn't cause any trouble immediately...

    An unusual pest

For the past few days I've been having an errant rooster (from where? who knows? I can hear three roosters around my neighborhood, but this is the first I've seen) hop the fence into my backyard and preen and crow outside my girls' enclosure. It is completely covered with the fence going about a...

    Mysterious fluid

When I went out to collect eggs today, I found a puddle of clear, green-tinted liquid in one of the boxes. None of the chickens is acting any differently and there wasn't any blood or yolk in the puddle. Chickens don't pee, so I don't know what it could be. Does anyone have an idea what that's...

My hen stopped laying approximately 2 weeks ago. Please help!

Must be going around. Except in my case my EE is the only one still laying regularly. I was getting six eggs a week from all three of my chickens, but it's been more than a week since my Cochin last laid and the Wyandotte is just doing whatever she feels like, apparently. Darn fickle chickens.
