Sick 1.5 yr old NH red hen

She is having trouble standing and there is a clear fluid coming from her vent. She has been very healthy looking and acting fine up till today when I found her in the coop acting strange. She walked out but was falling over. I see no other signs to indicate an injury. Just the fluid coming from...

What type of oil would you use, and would you squirt it down her throat?

Lethargic, large crop, one eye closed, shivering, hen

I haven't seen droppings yet. I went back out after posting and she was actually standing in the yard sleeping. I put her in the coop, but she came back out to be with the flock. Just fyi - I feed them fresh ground organc feed, and they free range. They eat lots of grass, bugs, frogs and...

Lethargic, large crop, one eye closed, shivering, hen

I just noticed a hen with one eye closed, just standing around. At first I thought she was sleeping, but when I approached she moved and I noticed one eye closed. From time to time she would open it, then close it back. I picked her up and she was shivering a little and her crop feels really...

Free ranging at 6 weeks... Why not?

Yeah, I started feeding them fresh ground organic feed from a local farmer a few weeks back and now they avoid the proccessed stuff like the plague. Of course, they choose bugs, frogs and grass over even the organic feed.

Free ranging at 6 weeks... Why not?

I have 14 Dominiques that I turned loose three weeks ago at 6 weeks old. They've been eating bugs, grass, frogs, raw and cooked sweet corn and an occassional tomato since. The amount of starter they consume has dropped significantly. I am curious as to what the scientist says the implications...

has anyone ever heard....of buying barrels of chick starter?

I've read and been told by organic feed farmers that grains, once cracked, lose their nutritional value pretty quickly, especially in hot weather. I started using fresh organic feed three weeks ago and now my chickens avoid the proccessed stuff like poison. Just a thought.

I need help solving a mystery...

Well, they all made it through the night. I think I will just check the house well every night before I close the door just in case a snake wonders in during the day.

I need help solving a mystery...

I went through the coop today and I can't see any place where a critter could get in. When I closed the door on the coop tonight all the chickens piled up at the door like there was something in there and they knew it. My fear is in this heat just piling up may suffocate birds. Anyone have any...

I need help solving a mystery...

I checked the bedding and up in the rafters. The coop is new and I haven't put in anything permanent yet, so, there's few places to hide. I wired over the small hole I had the cord pass through, and, checked the bedding well, I'll check it again today when I put them in for the night. If it...

I need help solving a mystery...

I originally thought maybe a weasel, but, whatever it is it's not eating the chicken, and a weasel would eat at least part of it. I've covered the hole, so, we'll see. Still hard for me to believe that two snakes would try to swallow a too large chicken in less than a week? Strange...

I need help solving a mystery...

I'm in Lawrence KS, and it has been extremely hot and humid, however, in the coop it's been below 100, and at night, when this is occuring, a bit cooler. During the hottest part of the day they stay in the coop or under the small door which provides shade. The coop is well ventilated. They seem...

I need help solving a mystery...

I have (had) 15 Dominique chicks, now 4 weeks old. I put them in their new house last week, and two days later found one chicken dead. It had no tears in it's flesh and no missing parts, even the feathers were all intact. This morning I went out and there was another one dead, this time a...
