My Tiny Farm Page
It started with some neighbors through the trees. I would be out in the garden, and I could hear the rooster they had all day. It was such a comforting sound, and I loved to hear it. As I pulled weeds, and turned soil, I would wish I had my own chickens. I loved the thought...

I was just going to say that...I think I see three hens. My hamburgs will scratch and range all day. they stop long enough to give me an egg, then back out to the yard. they are the last ones to the roost at night. and to say along with everyone else, they are very flighty....
I'm so sad. I'm reading about and seeing everyone's little chicki-poos, and i wanted my own...
I 14 eggs on March 4, then I set 13 more on the 12th. The day I did the final candling to stop turning on Sunday. then we went to my nephew's 2nd birthday party. we were only gone for few hours...
Alaska gets cold too...really

I used surplus sawdust from building our cabin as litter for the floor. my two reds were still young, and they tried bathing in it when i put it in the nest boxes, they broke eggs so I switched back to straw. Right now I have pine shavings in there, (floor and nest boxes) and they don't mind a...

YES! Sarge is back on the throne, literally...it's on old chair in the coop that he loves. he's crowing again too, and he's got his girls back. I kind of wonder what they were having for dinner...And not only did I get $10 for his stinkeye self, they sent my hubs home with 2 big bags of salad...
I think it might be excess moisture on the shell when it is placed in the fridge. instead of evaporating, it's absorbed by the shell, I've had it happen before. Dry them well before placing them in the fridge. plus don't use the soap. like the others said, just a little warm water is what I use
Mine are both! we eat the eggs, the old hens and extra roos go to the freezer. (or they get sold for the bosses dinner)
they are treated well, and are happy and healthy. They are great entertainment too
Once they are out of their rubbermaid brooder, they don't get to come back into the...
When I first got chickens, I actually stood outside the coop, peeking in to see who went in the boxes, and what color egg was in there when they came out. I hung out in the backyard pretty much all day. I only had seven, so it wasn't too hard to do. They were given to me and I knew not a...
i have a mystery roo (Monkey Stinkeye) who's attitude was just getting worse and worse. then he started attacking my SSH roo(Sarge) who is very non-aggressive. The Monkey flew at me 2 times, and i ran from him. my hubby saw me and told me that by me running from him, is showing him that he's...

I "heard" leghorn are mean. I don't like the leghorn's personallity anyway. I had a female and she was horrible. AND she ate all the feathers and almost killed herself. She was a stupid chicken. I would have sold her id the dog didn't get her.
my first one was like that...she was...
i have black australorps that were born on july third, and they didn't start laying until almost Christmas. I was getting antsy too, i guess some of the bigger birds take a little longer to lay.

Uh-oh...new term...what is a meat spot?
This is all nice to know. I have a 25 week old EE that I think will lay in late March. I have never had a chicken that wasn't already laying when I got them.
A meat spot is a little piece of the hen's reproductive tract or a little spot of...
