We got three Cornish x's too. A friend gave them to us to process. That was over a month ago. We only got one hen done so far and that didn't go too well, so I am out on the next ones. Over this last month, I've come to love these guys. I never realized how sweet they are. They will follow...
I am having trouble figuring out how to maneuver the chicken using the stump and ax method. We have a really, really big cornish x rooster that needs to be processed tomorrow. It will just be my hubby handling it all. How does one person hold the chicken still while aiming for a quick kill? We...
Need some help/encouragement. I have pet chickens. One of my oldest hens, Matilda, age 8, is crippled and limps. Her injured leg is getting worse and on top of that she has COPD or asthma-like symptoms. (3 dozes of antibiotics didn't touch it.) It's time to end her suffering. We've only culled...
A friend gave us 3 14 week old cornish chickens to try our hand at processing them. We are first and foremost, the owners of pet chickens, so this has been a bit of a struggle preparing for. We tried the cone method once for a sick hen and found it a better method than taking her to the vet...
Matilda has a terrible rattle in her lungs for quite a while. At times her nostrils get "buggers" and she has to breath from her mouth and I take a q-tip with oil and wipe them clean. She is a good eater and still the top hen. She is crippled from a fall two years ago and is slowing down b/c...
Does she have mites? Check around her vent at night with a flash light. They can make a bird sick pretty fast. And they can effect one bird more than the others.
I had a hen with those symptoms and tried many things but did not get any results. Ended up having to cull her. She just kept going downhill and was starting to suffer.
Thank you both for your comments. It is very helpful! Art passed away peacefully with his momma (me) by his side, talking gently to him telling him all the while what a good boy he has been. I believe it must have just been old age, natural causes as he had no symptoms as those that passed...
I've got a 7 year old leghorn that I believe is dying from old age. "Art" has just been changing over the last month, really ever since the big polar vortex. He just couldn't seem to get warm. He seems a little disoriented at times. His craw is ok, I've given him extra protein, put on heating...
We checked Hazel this morning and her crop was still full (another symptom she developed). So rather than put her through trying to fix a sour crop on top of her other issues we decided to cull her. It was so traumatic...we had never done this before. We usually take them to the vet to be...
I have a 5 year old hen, Hazel, that has the same symptoms! A couple of weeks ago her butt looked awful so I brought her in to clean her up and her lower abdomen felt like a balloon. I've just kept an eye on her b/c she seemed active, happy, eating etc. But now she is sleepy a lot and then...
