    First egg!

I started a new flock of bantams this summer and got my first egg today! Nothing happier than checking on the girls and seeing that first egg in the nest. Love it! A great end to a great day!

    Sod

I had no idea the plastic mesh was in there. It was literally within the dirt layer so you couldn't see it from the top side or bottom side. I never would have used it. So sad.

    Sod

Hey everyone. Feeling pretty sad and stupid and that I let my flock down so i thought I'd post something incase anyone else thought using a piece of sod in the run was a good idea. Garden store had strips of sod on sale and I thought my girls would like the fresh grass as a treat. Apparently...

    Bantams in winter

Do you think I need to insulate the coop at all.or provide some heat? They have a decent size run and its covered but I'm sure snow will still be able to blow in on them.

    Bantams in winter

Wow, thanks! That's good to know. I have a great assortment of cochins, EE, frizzles, milie fluers, silkies, d'anvers. I got 2 grab bag assortments in the spring and really hit the jack pot. I was nervous the I was going to get 20 roosters but I ended up with 6 and a great variety.

    Bantams in winter

Hey there! This will be my first winter with a bantam flock. Do I need to take any special precautions to protect them from the cold that is different than i do for my full size ladies? They are in separate coops.

    Fencing

My coop and run is completely preditor proof. Just looking for a simple fence to let the ladies out for short periods while I'm out doing yard work. This little fenced area doesn't have to be anything sturdy or secure. It's really just to keep them a bit contained.

    Fencing

I have a coop and covered run area for 14 bantams. I'm looking to put up- nothing fancy- some sort of fenced enclosure just so I can let them out to free range a bit but still keep them contained. Trying to keep it as simple as possible, I was just thinking a few stakes and plastic fencing...

Is there a dual purpose chicken that lays blue eggs? New to chickens and deciding how to build flock.

I was just going to suggest that! I love the blue/green eggs to but I definitely feel like you sacrifice some other traits just to have pretty colored eggs. Just my opinion, but I have always found my blue/green egg layers to be dmaller sized, skittish, and hard to gain their trust and...

    Most likely a raccoon attack.

A few thoughts...... 1. Soooo incredibly sorry this happened to you and your chickens. Its the worst. Something similar has happened to most chicken owners at some point and its just awful. I'm sure whatever got them will be back for the rest so make sure you button up your week spots. 2. I...

    Won't roost on bars

Thats exactly what mine are doing!!! They roost all day and huddle at night. I've never experienced this before. It's getting cold at night here. 70 during the day and 45 at night. I even tried putting a light on a timer at dusk to try and get them to feel more comfortable once inside but nope.

    Won't roost on bars

2x4"s and they're roughly a foot off the ground. My large breed hens roosts ranging from 2 to 4 feet high and they love to roost. Since these are bantams i put the roost lower. They have a great run set up with branches all at one end they roost all day on them. Just not at night. I have a...
