I still can not wrap my head around why there are restrictions to a few hens, in any town! I wish we could create a HUGE nationwide movement, I mean, I know we are nationwide, but ykwim??
Also it's a shame that these towns push us out with our chickens, because all the chicken owners I know...
Yes, Fairytails, that is exactly what happened, lol! I know unbelievable. I've been through meetings all summer where this chicken stuff got so heated. I've heard commission members swear at each other, yell, fight, and I've been told to keep quiet. None of this stuff is recorded cause it's such...
Well, 3 of the people who wrote the ordinance voted NOT to send it to Council. Leaving it dead in the water - it was a tie - 3-3. Unless a council member were to move to have them vote again, this time with commission member #7 to break the tie.
Honestly I think it's better without an ordinance...
Wish me luck with the planning commission tonight!
I hope they listen to me when I say things like:
Chicken Coops should provide each chicken with more than 1 sqft. of space per hen. (duh...most standards are larger than 1 sqft themselves!)
That storing manure in a compost for instance is...
My chickens died on my in-laws farm. They had never been separated before, and when a dog got one of them, the other died soon after of natural causes (stress?).
Thanks for all the tips!! I will use them!!! This seems to have turned into a personal vendetta against me, because our story keeps ending up in the papers. I'm not calling the papers, but I keep repeating the facts when the paper comes and they don't like it!
UPDATE: First off sorry for dropping the thread here. My husband did something and erased all the cookies, I couldnt get into my account, couldnt remember the password or which email.
Anyways. After many months of our Planning Commission working on an ordinance, they almost scrapped it. Saying...
LOL! And continue we will....
They have most all the wording, but for fence structure outside of the run. This came up as I explained the benefits of ranging.
So on to next months meeting. Aug. 1st. And we'll see where it goes from there.
4 Chickens (no roosters), coop must be 10 ft. from...
Meeting tonight! I'll update as soon as I get home. They were planning on working on wording. Let's hope they have moved forward and haven't decided to back out of this idea....
Silkies ~ I agree with a lot of people here that after our Right to Farm Act was revised in 2001, it covers anyone selling their farm products as long as we follow GAAMPS.
As far as the ordinance, it you study Michigan's General Village Code, it clearly states that Villages can NOT enforce vague...
Thanks! I'm waiting with baited breath, you never know what these people might decide.
I have 2 wks left! LOL and then one of my first orders of business (after recovery from the c/s) is the next planning commission meeting.
UPDATE: We are moving forward. Looks like Planning is going to clarify the current ordinance. And admitted it was very vague. This may go faster than amending, which would take council approval and a public hearing. Still won't say how long or which way this is going, but promised to look at it...
Not much yet. Planning Commission Meeting is Wed., they seem positive that we'll have something on the books by the end of summer. Still waiting to hear from my attorney. And I'll update again after we see what happens Wed. There have been petitions around town and quite a few people want the...
Do you have any other local ordinances for council to look at as "inspiration" ? The key I think would be calming their fears, getting community support and showing other areas that have done this with success.
Time to try the ordinance amendment again. I've tried using both tactics at the same time. Using MRTFA and/ordinance amendment, and MRTFA was shot down pretty fast, and the attorney I found to work pro-bono would not fight for me on this Act. But ordinance change seems to be the better way in my...
I will be attending this weeks Planning Commission Meeting where the topic of clarifying village ordinance will be on the table.
Right now we have a very vague ordinance that relies on looking at what is permitted in one district to give us the prohibited uses of another district (ie. This is...
I'm so sorry you are going through this. It makes me so mad. I don't know much about your area of the country, but we recently had to rehome some hens. And it was very heartbreaking. These ordinances are ludicrous, And the emotional toll this takes on a family is hard. I'm up here in MI and...
