    Worried About Broody Hen

I had a RIR go broody last summer. She first sat on a clutch of 9 eggs and was sitting very well for the first couple of days, then disaster. A large rat snake got in during the night and ate all but two of the eggs. That day I got 8 eggs out of my other hens so I removed the two left from...

    my chickens eat maggots?

My RIR hens will go nuts over maggots, grubs and about any other type of worm. They will just about kill each other trying to catch and eat the little green lizards that run around everywhere around the house.

Help I think My RIR hen is broody!

The eggs should be fertile. I have 3 roos with 13 hens. Prior to her installing herself in the nest the roos constantly harass the hens. I am planning on disposing of the two extra roos but haven't gotten around to doing the deed. She seems quite comfortable in her private cage it's just...

Help I think My RIR hen is broody!

I had 25 RIR chickes delivered Dec. 31st 2008 and it is July 7th 2009. One of my RIR hens refuses to get off of the nest. She is not showing any sign of aggression and even allows me to pet her. The problem is she has been sitting on the nest for 3 days and as far as I can tell she has only...

    coop life

In Miami in the spring it should be fine outside at a month old. I would put a heat lamp just to keep the temp up a bit at night. I brooded my chicks outside in their coop when they were delivered on Dec. 31st. I used two heat lamps and kept the temp up around 90-95 for the first couple of...

New Chicken Farmer needs help with new babies

My RIR's are 3 months old today. They were brooded right in their coop so re-homing was not an issue for me but they still won't go more than a couple of hundred feet from their coop even when I free range them all day. When I first took down the brooder wall and gave them access to the...

How can I pick out the roo's in my RIR's?

I have 26 RIR chicks that are about 5 weeks old. How can I pick out the roos? I have been reading that I need to separate the roos at about 6-8 weeks old but I can't tell which are which. Some of the chicks are growing red/pink combs but it seems that all of them have at least some comb. Any...

Our standards for poultry in the USA... is an embarrassment....

IMHO, The bleach disinfecting is not about protecting health. Proper cooking methods kill any bacteria that is found on the carcass and no matter what you use there will be bacteria there. The disinfection is to prolong shelf life. I worked in the seafood industry many years ago and most...

when can I feed them bugs?

My RIR's are 8 days old and when I go out to the coop, where I have my brooder set up, bugs fly in. It is mostly mosquitoes and moths but the chicks absolutely destroy anything that gets within reach. I haven't caught and given them any bugs yet but they seem to be doing just fine catching and...

Hawks in the air not 1 but 4....things that make you go Hmmmmm

I have red-tailed hawks around constantly but the ones that concern me the most are the Bald Eagles. I have two that hang out in an oak tree on the back of my property. I only see them sitting in the winter time but they are in the area year round. I can only imagine what a pair of eagles...
