Wow...great story. Glad it had a good ending. Hooray for Chester. I would love to get a full size roo. Hubby is done building coops and runs for now. One of my roos is a silkie accident. I am glad though.
He has the most beautiful crow, very soothing. I wish you had your story on video.......

If i did have it on video, it would have to have been named 'PIG PILE!' cause I swear that is what the dogs were thinking when they went charging out there!

I have one dog who all I have to do is whisper his name and sneak to the door and he goes nuts to get out, cause he knows I am telling him there is a squirrel on the bird feeder! And boy he goes out the door and turns hard right to leap at the feeder off the deck! He will never get one, but it sure is fun to watch him try!

I dont know how those dogs knew what was going on, but they launched out that door, and went right for the fight, not a moment to look around! and they chased the hawk too! followed him up and down the driveway! going nuts! They knew which bird to chase! Man I am lucky to have such great critters!

I hope you can discourage your 'visitors'. I love watching them, and could never hurt one, but I am glad they havent succeeded in my yard yet.

Redtail feed mostly on small animal, not birds. They will take a few birds, but the coppers and sharpshim feed on birds, also faster hawks.

That must've been scary! I had my chickens out freeranging the other day and a HUGE hawk flew over our heads. It looked like it was about to dive but then it saw me and flew away I guess, or maybe it was just really windy. Then later that same day while I still had them out, ANOTHER smaller one landed in one of the tall hickory trees right above me and the chickens! I was scared half to death! The chickens didn't even notice until it flew away. Whew... so many dangers in their little world.

We're seeing lots of hawks lately too. My birds free range, but there is a lot of cover in their yard, along with wires strung for grapevine trellis. We also have a fake owl. Think I'll go out and hang some CD's & tin cans around just for good measure, and put some more cat food out for the crows.

I have red-tailed hawks around constantly but the ones that concern me the most are the Bald Eagles. I have two that hang out in an oak tree on the back of my property. I only see them sitting in the winter time but they are in the area year round. I can only imagine what a pair of eagles would do to a free range flock.
