The Flock
OUR FLOCK STORY
April 2008: Our flock started with 6 Rhode Island Reds - it was suppose to be 6 hens, but it ended up being 1 rooster and 5 hens. We bought them wanting the eggs, not realizing how quickly we might get addicted.
June 2008: Two months later while at the feed store...
Incubation History
I will keep track of happenings as we progress to "HATCH" day.

DAY 1 - Setting the Eggs
We set 16 eggs today. They include RIR and RIR/Australorp "X". Temperature remained stable at 100 degrees and humidity at 39 %. I logged the weight of each egg and noted...

BELLA
Bella died on 6/16/2009 at 2 1/2 years old. They think it was a brain tumor or brain hemorrage. It was not easy to loose her. She was a rescue that turned into an awesome dog that was our snuggle bug - even at 60 lbs.

Sorry for your loss, I just lost one today too - same type of symptons. I could not figure out what was wrong. I handled her found no worms, sour crop, mites??? I tried hand feeding her for 4 days but eventually she would not eat anymore. By that time her poop was green which is a sign of...
I always take the cautious approach - just in case I guess wrong. I would hate to throw any out that are actually babies. I have the hardest time with my Marans eggs since they are dark. I sometimes just leave them in when I am unsure - although I am worried I might have an expolision some day...
I was wondering what members recommend for height of fencing. My turkeys, once they "hopefully" hatch, will be allowed to free range on 4 fenced in acres. The fence is 4 ft tall. My chickens which are heavy breeds never try to leave the yard. We also have three ducks that also never try to...
Four years ago, my response would have been different, but I discovered the Dog Whisperer.
If you have never watched him, you should. If it wasn't for him I would not have trained my three dogs to roam the pasture with 15 chickens - together. I attached his website link and an article link...
This is my first hatch too. I have been keeping track on my BYC page (incubating history). I wanted to post more pictures - but it was hard to get them to come out.
My first pip was at 6:30 this morning - came home at 12:00, and a little bit of a bigger pip. THIS takes a LONG TIME!

You should also candle the eggs to make sure the air sac and the large end of the eggs did not rupture.
A ruptured air sack will appear as a floating air bubble inside the egg that always moves to the top as you rotate the egg. If this happened, then the may not hatch.
Agreed - every state has different laws, but you could contact your State Attorney General's office, but do not delay.
Have you talked with them yet - they may let you return it if you pay the mileage added to the vehicle. JUST DO NOT WAIT. Call the AG or the owner of the dealership. The...
Thinking that she is an intruder could be it. Not sure when you add her back in, but make sure you do it at night - because the others are blind. Also, I used a trick I read about - spray all the chickens with a light solution of vinegar and water.
Since all the chickens will smell the same...
It is the amount of surface space on the water dish that determines how much humidity is created. You said you took the second dish out - try putting a dish back in that has a smaller surface space.
Ex: If the one you took out measured 6 inches in diameter, put one in that is 3 inches.
Hope...
Still air does not circulate the air so the temperature is not distributed. You generally need to run it at a higher temperature - around 100-101 degrees. With a fan, the air is circulated so the eggs get a constant temperature across all of them.
With a fan you can keep the temperature at...
I think when given the opportunity they will eat almost anything. My sister in Hawaii gets doves in her chicken coop. The doves are so dumb that they let the chickens peck them and eventually kill them.
Then the chickens run around with the dead dove in their mouth because they do not want to...
