Comment by 'dufusanddingus' in article 'Winter-Coop-Temperatures'

Thank you for this article. I wish I would have read it sooner. I woke up at 4:00 this morning to a coop on fire, and I had a heat lamp in it. I hope others will heed the warning and use a safer form of heat if it is necessary.

    Red heat lamp?

DO NOT USE HEAT LAMPS IN YOUR COOP. I don't know how it happened, because it was set up pretty securely - but my heat lamp burned my coop down and I lost all my chickens. It was devastating. I had read this warning from other before and ignored it and I paid the price. Here is a blog post...

    Constipated Rooster?

I have an english rooster who has been exhibiting some symptoms that seem like constipation for the last few days. He is acting very healthy and normal besides this one behavior - he is eating fine, drinking fine, very active. However every few hours he is doing the motion he does when he...

New Guy wondering what kind or coop to get or build.

How many eggs you'll get depends on the kind of chickens you have. When I was a beginner I picked up the book Keeping Chickens by Ashley English, and there is some good info on there about different breeds and their individual temperments, heat/cold toleration level, etc, as well as basic care...

    ewww mites!

When my hens had lice -- transparent but visible to the naked eye -- I cleaned out (and burned) all the straw bedding in their coop and surrounding area, then I used a bucket of warm soapy water with bleach in it and scrubbed down the entire inside of the coop and the nest boxes. I do this...

    What's wrong with my rooster?

Sounds like he may be super tired, possibly malnourished, or maybe has a disease. I know that's a pretty broad statement and maybe not very helpful, but the point is that I would continue to keep him separated from the rest of your flock until he acts normal. I would dote on him with...

Healthy hen with a lame leg

Did yours make any noises or try to get away from you when you touched the broken leg? I thought it looked like it could be broken, but I was very surprised that when I touched it she did not react at all.

Update, Help, Hen suddenly lethargic, laying down, not moving, DEAD, less than 2 hours later

Earlier this year a similar thing happened with our rooster. Out of the blue he just got really lethargic, had basically just laid down on his face and closed his eyes, and I thought for sure he was going to die. He even let me pick him up and hold him, which he would never do normally. I...

Healthy hen with a lame leg

About four days ago I started noticing our adult cochin hen was not walking around very much during the day. I picked her up from the spot she had been hanging out in and set her next to the food and water. She started eating and drinking like crazy as though she had not been able to make it...

Rooster face down on ground with mouth gaping, then acting normal later.

Just spoke with the local chicken vet on the phone - he didn't think it was gapeworm seeing as the rooster is not constantly gaping. He thinks maybe pneumonia, which is possible because they are a heat-loving type of bird and lately our nights have started to get into the high 30's and I can...

Rooster face down on ground with mouth gaping, then acting normal later.

About a week ago as I was closing my coop I noticed one of the chickens gaping, so I ran inside and read on the internet about it. It sounded to me like it could have been that she was just resettling her food, so I decided to watch her for a few days to see if it continued which would indicate...
