    Chicken Breed Focus - Campine

I am (impatiently) waiting for the delivery of my mini-flock of Gold Campine chicks to arrive. The brooder is ready, but the waiting is killing me!

I think that would be fine - poor little thing. You did all you could for her, and I'm sure her spirit is grateful for it. If bad things come in threes then her passing is the third one, no more allowed! Don't ask how I made the count 3, its kinda like chicken math - don't analyze, just accept.

Thanks, Ron. She was already fixed, unfortunately she was both Feral and FIV positive. So I told my vet to put her to sleep. I had a kitty who died of FIV and it isn't a pleasant way to go. Back to chicken concerns now..

Off the topic of natural remedies/oregano, I went out to the trap I had set for the nasty possum(s) that killed my girls and found.....................a beautiful calico kitty. I just got back from taking her to the vet to be fixed (if she hasn't been), checked for FIV/FeLV (euthanized if...

That was quick. I found the following about Oregano oil as medicine: http://www.ehow.com/about_5384536_recommended-dosage-oil-oregano-infection.html and specifically for chickens: http://www.bendbulletin.com/article/20121227/NEWS0107/212270337/

Hi PetRock On the question of natural antibiotic (oregano, or its close cousin, marjoram) I did a quick search in my herbal healing books and couldn't find a reference to it. I'll do an internet search, and if I turn anything up on it, I'll let you know............ Jan

    Campine Chicken thread?

Did she or any of the others get injured in the fox attack? Even if they didn't I'd worry about shock from the incident. You might want to try posting on the Emergency, Medical thread to get some advice. Good luck with her! Jan

    Alternatives to wood shavings?

I don't know about the chickens eating them, but from my experience with rice hulls - they made my skin itch for days, even after they were all washed off, clothes laundered, hair scrubbed. For years after that if I even thought about rice hulls I would go into an itching fit. I use wood...

I had forgotten how annoying strangers at the door can be. When I lived in a non-gated apartment I started saying "I worship Satan (not true), and if you don't leave NOW I'll prove it to you the hard way." Worked on proselytizers and salespeople. I'm such a baaad child! Jan

Thanks, Ron & Juststruttin, That's the same thing I was thinking. They were just listless and not as perked up by water & food like the others were. Also, I noticed they were markedly smaller. One of the Barred Rocks looked to be a 'runt' and may not make it either. I was not a happy camper...

Thanks, Ron. I'm hoping they will just refund, I will get any future chicks locally if I can, and may invest in an incubator later in the year. The only bright spot is the rest of the chicks - all still acting like 'starving' teenagers at a pizza buffet!

Good(?) morning all Tragedy struck in my chick nursery last night. All of the chicks are active and eating/drinking except the 5 golden campine girls. 4 of them have died, one is still holding on, but I don't have much hope for her. I think it would have been better if the hatchery had...

Finally got my new chicks settled in to their first "nursery" after taking an individual photo of each of them. All arrived in good condition, some are a bit smaller than the others, but that could be due to breed difference. I thought that they wouldn't be able to send any of the Gold Campine...

Deb, I don't need chicks right at the moment, but when I do, I'll let you know. Placerville is pretty close, I pass through it on my seasonal trip to Apple Hill to get pie apples. Clucks and coos Jan
