On the fermented feed thread, there was some discussion about oregano being a natural antibiotic. Does anyone have any info or links to support this?
Hi PetRock

On the question of natural antibiotic (oregano, or its close cousin, marjoram) I did a quick search in my herbal healing books and couldn't find a reference to it. I'll do an internet search, and if I turn anything up on it, I'll let you know............

Get Dengard and corid too!

Pro biotics for summer heat

Poultry dust and DE(food grade)

Baby Vitamin drops without iron

More?
Thanks Ron:

I added these to my list and now I am also researching the Oregano option. I am more of a naturalist anyway, but sometimes if I don't know a natural cure I go with the other options.

If anyone else has their must haves I will appreciate it and add them to my list so I can start buying them over time.

Best treatment for upper respiratory problems is Denegard. Unfortunately it needs to be ordered. In the mean time I would put unfiltered (the mother kind from the health food store) apple cider vinegar in their water (4 teaspoons to a gallon) it is an natural decongestant. Unfortunately in the winter months if you do not have lots of ventilation in your coupe the chickens breaths give off a lot of moisture that builds up in the room and can cause upper respiratory problems. Keeping the coup really clean helps also. The urine from their feces can build up the ammonia in the air and can irritate their sinus's and cause the same symptoms. I had one this year start sounding a little raspy and I cleaned the coup and she stopped and was fine.

I am sorry you guys are having problems. I know how upsetting it can be

Hope this helps and your chickens get better

I clean the coup almost daily. It barely smells at all. The ventilation is pretty good. I'm going to get the ACV. Thanks, Chickee

Thank You!

Great advice. Look down the throat to see if there is anything there. It could be coincidence but with two giving wormer and having the same symptoms after treatment the cause is likely to be the worm treatment. Hopefully the coughing will go away soon.

Order the Denegard and treat like chickee said with ACV. The watery eyes and nasal discharge are illness symptoms, either viral or bacterial. The advice with respiratory illness with chickens is to treat it quickly and separate those with symptoms.

I have a good feeling about your chickens recovering quickly!

You guys are so awesome!!!
Ok, No signs of gape. cleaned her beak & when she shook her head a little drainage came out. I have her in the garage with some others, but how far apart from them should she be? She's in her own cage about 6 feet away from another...too close? I will order the Denegard. Thanks again!!

Quote: So far it sounds like digestion problems, which wormers can cause. Depending on what the illness is and how it spreads, 6ft should work.

Does the local feed store carry save a chick pro biotic? Also, make sure they have access to grit. The crop is normal?

I hope this all helps her soon!

Thank You!

I have been using Oregano oil when I catch a cold for years now. I think it works better than zinc.
That's good to hear! Monet has had one thing after another for the past 2 1/2 months. My grandkids started full time daycare at a Kindercare at about the same time. I think that they are sharing unwanted things with us. Monet is usually so healthy with maybe 1 cold in a year. Then 2013 hit and as soon as she gets better from one thing she has something new. I'm going to up her nutrition with fresh juice and lace it with a drop or two of oregano oil!
