You and I seem to be having similar problems.

I also just wormed, but not convinced that all is well yet. Several chickens still have very watery stools, they are still drinking as much water as in summer, and just noticed my EE has similar symptoms to your Flossie. I'm going to follow Ron's advice and isolate her and am looking into the antibiotics. Hate to give something if it's not needed, but am worried about waiting too long. I'd really appreciate hearing about anything you try and if you get results. I'll let you know from my end, too. Good luck!

Best treatment for upper respiratory problems is Denegard. Unfortunately it needs to be ordered. In the mean time I would put unfiltered (the mother kind from the health food store) apple cider vinegar in their water (4 teaspoons to a gallon) it is an natural decongestant. Unfortunately in the winter months if you do not have lots of ventilation in your coupe the chickens breaths give off a lot of moisture that builds up in the room and can cause upper respiratory problems. Keeping the coup really clean helps also. The urine from their feces can build up the ammonia in the air and can irritate their sinus's and cause the same symptoms. I had one this year start sounding a little raspy and I cleaned the coup and she stopped and was fine.

I am sorry you guys are having problems. I know how upsetting it can be

Hope this helps and your chickens get better

So I have a question for all you hatchers......... For chickens (even though I am currently trying to hatch my free quail eggs) how bad is trying to incubate at about 1 degree less than the 99.5? Does it kill them all, or some, I thought I read that low temp cause them to be weak and don't hatch too well as well as a delayed hatch day if the temp is low.

But how low is too low and let's say it is only low for the first 3-5 days of incubating?

Any thoughts OR opinions on that?

Great advice. Look down the throat to see if there is anything there. It could be coincidence but with two giving wormer and having the same symptoms after treatment the cause is likely to be the worm treatment. Hopefully the coughing will go away soon.

Order the Denegard and treat like chickee said with ACV. The watery eyes and nasal discharge are illness symptoms, either viral or bacterial. The advice with respiratory illness with chickens is to treat it quickly and separate those with symptoms.

I have a good feeling about your chickens recovering quickly!

OH, one other question..... If you were setting up new for your chickens (like I am) what are the must have "medications" natural or manufactured that you would recommend to have on hand all the time?

It seems to me that BluKote (sp), Vertimycin, and Vinegar (mother type) would all be things that may be used rather frequently.....

Any other tools or items you would recommend? Tools, such as tweezers maybe, a good pair of scissors for wing clipping maybe, or a pet carrier for quarantine, etc.

What items do YOU find indispensable?

Thanks again!

We want to hatch on March 30th, (the day BEFORE Easter Sunday)
button quail: 16 days to hatch; set March 14th
coturnix quail: 18 days to hatch; set March 12th
seramas: 19 days to hatch; set March 11th
other bantam and LF: 21 days to hatch; set March 9th
bobwhite quail: 23 days to hatch; set March 7th

Which is today.
Oh, rats! My incubator will hopefully be here tomorrow and then I have to make sure it is running correctly before loading it with eggs. I should have asked for Coturnix quail instead! Well, I may have a day after Easter hatch!

On the fermented feed thread, there was some discussion about oregano being a natural antibiotic. Does anyone have any info or links to support this?
